As for the roof , I saw this at Bletchley a few weeks ago and only took a quick pic because I didn't recognise the twin vent roof ....

My bus is N registered, March 1975 after being converted by Devon Conversions, but if it had been registered according to build date, October 1973 it would have been L. Strangely the prefix letters are correct for where the bus lives now.

Thanks Rossco, Yep definitely hooked but absolutely loving it, We have even started a youtube channel to document the "journey". I thought if my 2 boys start losing interest in the resto then looking after the social media side should help keep them involved.

 

Nice one, the boys will be hooked, my son did he loves his rides too. The roof doesnt look that bad, but looks van be deceiving Lol. You tube builds can be fun too. Its an interesting pop top roof there. Good luck now get out there and sort it....hahaha.

 

Roof looks familiar, I had this one but I thought it was horrible, gave it away and fitted a dormobile one.

It does look very similar, I actually have a bed for it as well I’ll set it up and post some pics later. Did you have to modify the cut out when you swapped yours?

 

Yes, The hole was the slightly wrong size in all directions, I had to cut a bit off at the sides and extend front and rear, but not much.

 

Ok, I need to make a decision then. I’m currently starting the process of replacing the tin roof, I’ve got a front roof cut that I’m preparing to graft on, this was the best way to over come the rotten tops of the door frames as they were still attached to the roof cut. My plan was then to use a new 1/4 skin on the rear then repair panels down the sides. Then cut to match roof cut out. The front section I have already has the cut for a pop top which is of similar dimensions to mine. I’ll have a proper look at the current pop top and see if it’s worth keeping.

 

Yes definitely decide on your poptop before you do anything with the roof, or fit everything you've got so you'd just be trimming. I had a job once where a customer had bought a Westfalia roof (a new repro) and paid for fitting. When the company got as far as dropping the canvas down there was no tin roof under it and they refused to deal with it, I had to get some sheet rolled/curved to add about 6" to either side. All done in a panic so they could go on holiday.
Dormobiles are no walk in the park either, they have a serious framework with curved angle sections and legs that clamp the roof skin and extend to the gutters so just buying the roof is well short of the full installation. All roofs have their quirks.
Part fitted, I got the main frame from the seller - he'd agreed to provide "everything" but he was well cheesed when I insisted he cut the frame from the roof. I had to make the legs as he drew a line there and wouldn't budge.

 

Yeh I’m currently thinking of fitting the roof sections I have which will leave me with a small cut out which I can then trim to suit which ever pop top I go for. Not knowing which one I have makes it a decision a little tricky but also as it seems to be hard to identify that probably indicates it wasn’t a popular roof for what ever reason. The frame currently fitted to the roof is actually just angle iron which I doubt is original.

 

From on top it looks like a dormobile but clearly doesn’t operate like one!

 

I think it was some kind of Devon who would sort of assemble campers with customer supplied roofs as well as their own line which changed over the years. I expect that the angle frame likely is original, Devon weren't know for their neat engineering, if you wouldn't see it, they lashed it up crudely.
