Hi, I have a spark plug hole that requires a helicoil, it appears to have been tapped out already. The cyliner head is off the engine. Has anybody fittted a helicoil in a spark plug hole? or has any advice about the procedure. Can you buy just the coil or do you have to buy a kit. Thanks for reading this
No advice other than I've never heard good things about helicoils in heads. "Timesert" seems to get mentioned as a better option.
If your going this way. I would Youtube it.. Much easier to understand a procedure when you can see it.. Sent from my YAL-L41 using Tapatalk
I thinks quite common to helicoil plugs - much easier as it off. Basically you drill to the correct size for the tap(if necessary) Use the correct sized tap for the coil, then insert the coil using the correct tool. Its a while since I did it but it wasnt that hard to do - just got to hold your nerve when drilling/tapping and obv have the right bits. I have the set for spark plugs somewhere.
Look on eBay for spark plug repair kit , I’ve done plenty, in and out of the car, never had any issues , there are also a collar type which screws in with the plug time serts are more expensive a little trickier but pein over on the inside to prevent them pulling out , they do need a much bigger hole drilling
Go for a metal collar/Timesert. Helicoils are fine, but can unscrew with the plug (and it’s head off again to fix them). I had two unscrew on a Vege engine I had. Inserts give a nice repair.
I guess because the head is cast (and is it Aluminium or steel)? you can't just weld around the inside of the hole and re-tap it (head off the block of course)?
