Wiring hazards into my indicators but for life of me I can’t get them to flash.

got a simple switch for hazards, on and off

take a wire from a live to switch and then from switch to all indicators. Nothing (if I’m lucky one side is on permanent.

wired a separate 2 pin relay but just the same.

what am I forgetting? I’ve done this before but this time just can’t grasp it

  2. You need to wite the switch so it energises the flasher relay. If you just wire it to all indicators, they'll be on all the time.

It was wired to the relay so I thought that is what makes it flash?

Simple wiring would be 12 volt unswitched feed to hazard flasher relay positive.
Output of relay to both poles of a double pole switch. One pole of switch to left indicators, one pole of switch to right indicators.

More sophisticated is to have a 3 pole changeover switch - then you can imitate the VW wiring - one pole of switch switches power to flasher relay from ignition switched side to unswitched for hazards. Other two poles basically short out the indicator switch when hazards selected, switch makes contact from flasher relay out to left indicators and switch makes contact from flasher relay out to right indicators.

    Still scratching head.

Take power to a two pin flasher relay, so as I connect the other pin to a light it’s on permanent but doesn’t flash. shouldn’t the relay make it flash?

Yes , but with a single 21W bulb a two terminal flasher wont necessarily see enough current to warm up the bimetallic strip. With two 21W bulbs it will flash properly..
A modern 3 terminal flasher will detect a single bulb load and flash double speed. ( it measures the current drain using electronics and a low valued resistor.. a hoop of wire inside the unit...)

    Maybe I need a 3 pin then

If you use the LED compatible flasher relays they should start flashing as soon as there is any load.
