Thanks for that David - I see what you mean about the fan position. The bracket was already there so I just bolted it on. I'll drill new holes :)

There appears to be a flexible piece that goes between the part as positioned in "A" and the snail fan, which you don't appear to have.
The plastic part fitted appears to have a indented shoulder where this part should fit.

100% original snail fan and trunking here. This is a ’77, other years may be different, and genuine.

So it looks like VW moved it to the right and did away with the plastic pipe for later models? Hmm. Might have to come up with a hybrid solution.

My stock 73 was off to one side like yours, I reckon they moved it just for FI to get it out of the way of the air filter.

Did yours have that plastic pipe?

  8. That's what I thought looking at davidoft's pics, my stock 76 with carbs has the fan closer to the hatch with corrugated card pipes. That plastic pipe must be FI only.

No it didn't, but it was 25 yeats old when I got it. If I had to take a stab I'd say it never had the plastic pipe, it was a very complete unmessed bus generally. The hard turn the plastic pipe gives you wouldn't have worked for the fan position as far as I can see.

FI bus engine compartments are a right mess aren't they?

Job done and put some of the old paper pipes on to check I'm happy with it before cutting my new pipe

Happy with that. Thanks @davidoft, you were spot on.

Grey cells struggling again - can't remember if I've asked this before

I bought one of those adapters for oil pressure gauge/light
    [IMG]
I'm guessing "G" is for gauge but what is "WK" then? Does it actually matter which way round I connect the wires?

  13. G is for gauge, WK is for the oil warning light. They have go the right way round as they do different things.

Thanks Snotty. Makes sense. Dumb question.

  15. Think WK stands for “Warnkontakt”. It’s just a switch. The G output is more like a variable resistor, which varies with oil pressure.

If you got it the wrong way round no harm done but you'd know because your pressure gauge would read max as soon as you switch on the ignition and the oil light won't go off. Done it many times as I can't see the terminals the way mine's fitted. Did it when I was cranking for oil pressure which caused me some worry.

I think this may be a regulator thing? The fuel gauge goes up to about 3/8 when the tank is empty and shows full at full. It's a new sender that correctly shows 79ohms in the empty position and it's all new wiring. I haven't got a spare gauge regulator so would have to order one. Any ideas please folks?

Also please would somebody tell me what that plate is called in this pic as I need a new seal for the plate and for the drain plug.

  19. Oil strainer plate? Assume you’re aware that tightening that bolt too much will make you very sad?
