Removed knackered seal and chipped windscreen - thanked the VW lords for only surface rust. Rubbed down and treated with POR 15 ready for new windscreen and gen vw seal.

  2. Just read your entire thread, some lovely detailed work. Looks like your a fine detail kinda fella ..........

Go on admit it, you've done this before

  4. See me, I would call that a perfectionist... Keep up the top class work, as I was told many years ago, if its worth doing then its worth doing right ;)

  6. I am rollering it. i have had loads of stupid flies and bugs, very annoying but they come off quite well once it is dry.

i have done the main poptop as well but i think it needs a second coat

  7. 1st coat got sucked up in no time, dry as a bone.

I'm looking for decals now.. Unsure of the accuracy of the ebay ones. Can't find any on VWH/JK.. Help :-

  8. i am going to order mine from Gowesty in USA, do you want to go in with me and go halves on the shipping costs? will be about $18 inc stickers for each of us?

  9. Kettle on? It's been a while.

So I had a plan, there is always a plan.. And it didn't work out.

The plan was to do a load of jobs as the summer started (topping up the tan whilst making progress on the van) but instead it rained - and I got tired of the van. I kept getting thwarted by 'another' job that needed doing and in the end I threw the towel in.

And bought one of these / / /

I rode it all summer and gave myself a well needed break from the van.

But now I'm back.. Starting with the engine baffle thingies and the Firetec : tick : job done.

The doors have been rubbed down and sprayed with a can (not too bad a job, slightly different shade of beige to the 30year old paint.. but this is a temp fix to make me happy).
Seals are in on the cab doors and have been slammed shut for a week now to help them bed in.

Quarter light windows have just this minute been completed, I rubbed down the frames and gave them a coating of matte black, new rubbers and a polish. Quite enjoyed it, reminded me of Christmas for some strange reason :-

Hoping to have both doors/rubbers/windows/locks etc etc done this weekend - then it's a clean up inside and play with the leisure electrics (and an outing somewhere).

  10. Just been reading your entire thread with interest. Nice Westie, "Berlin" spec. You are finding like I did that even a bus that seems pretty good and straight has lots of work to be done. There isn't much I haven't worked on and you seem to be going the same way, and doing a great job.
I have a question. There is a lot of stuff going on under the sliding door. What's installed there?

  11. Ta. That's the gas tank/supply for the hob.
Like you say, sometimes you do a job for the sake of doing a job (that doesn't even need doing). Enjoyable though.

So since owning the van - it has done approximately 10 miles.. I drove it up the bypass, back home, to the garage and it stayed there over winter (I'm counting Jan, Feb, March as winter too as it's so cold and wet) whilst I took things apart that didn't need taking apart, replacing bits and bobs and generally 'potching' around. Gallons of tea has been consumed since my last post and this is where we are..

Someone suggested doing the Tour of Pembrokeshire (basically a bike ride) and what a great idea it would be to take the van. So I had a van (in pieces), no mot, no tax, 4 cracked tires and not alot of time. Got the RA08's fitted, the tax paid for  and it happily passed the mot  . Now bear in mind since arriving in the UK, it has completed all of 10 miles, probably 9 of them with a seized caliper. I was about to embark on a 140mile trek to West Wales.

    Holy moly.

My thoughts on the drive out went a little like this. Started her up 'yey' and then it was 'what if there's a fire?, sidewinds, sidewinds, oh heck, fire?, whats that noise, fire?, somethings rattling, crosswinds, check for smoke...' Repeat for 140 miles. I arrived exhausted and somewhat relieved.

The drive back my thoughts went a little something like this. Started her up 'yey, smiled, waved at some bays, flashed at some splitties, smiled, talked a little, arrived home and thought it sounded better (mechanically) having completed the 240 miles than when we left.

I noted several things this weekend. It's still bloody cold and I need a heat source of some kind during the nights. West Wales has more hills than l can remember. I need to wire up my Firetec led and forget about the possibility of a fire every 30 seconds. Vans still and always rule the campsite/roads. Smile.

  13. Yay great stuff now dont take it apart just keep using it:thumbsup:

  14. Yup, won't be taking anything off that will stop me from driving on it or restricting me to working in a garage. Next plan is leisure battery/12v/240v hookup etc. Any recommendations will be well received. Cheers.

  15. Excellent - glad you got to use your van at long last! Looks like you've done some great work on it

As for this ^^^ I go through this entire process every time we go out (though it generally takes a lot less than 140 miles to get from stage one to stage two these days!)
