good looking van, the chassis number your looking for is stamped in the engine bay to the left side chassis leg ( not on the leg itself but on the metal panel thats welded to the top of the chassis leg and forms the hole the engine drops into... at least thats where mine is :) hope that helps...

  4. Thanks again for the replies, been smiling like a cat that got the cream c.ream all day, itching to get back and have a closer look. The van is at my parents - safer 'hood than mine! C:)

Apologies any dial up users.. (those days were fun).

  5. ps I have no doubt the van will be recieved with a warm welcome, it'll be our little 'escape from it all' vehicle. However, if it was a resto.... I'd be better off joining the Rightmove forum :-X

    Cheers again, enjoy the weekend.

  11. So she found out via Facebook yesterday : facepalm : after my brothers gf let it slip... D'oh.

I confessed all and showed a photo or two on the phone - I was greated with 'aww that looks awesome.. where are we going.. can I change the curtains' etc etc!

My brother and I spent pretty much all day playing with the electrics, blowing fuses and installing/wiring UK spec headlights.

The previous owner had quoted 'The headlights, blinkers and wind shield wipers do have a short some where but do work' - which was almost correct, apart from the 'do work' part! Upon checking fuses, and cooking my multimeter  it appeared that several things were apparent.

    1. They had played 'guess the connector' with both the headlight switch, hazard switch, the relay and fuse box.
    2. There was a short where the number plate light wire had broken and was touching the body..
    3. The indicator/emergency relay was missing - this confused us for a while :)) .
    4. There were wires going to terminals that were incorrect.

The quickest resolution was to remove all wires from a switch or relay (we did one switch to fusebox at a time), my brother shout the colour of wire and terminal number - and I connect. Nightmare.

Anyway, sidelights, tailights, brake lights and headlights 'are working' although I can't flash/highbeam.

Padded dashboard cover - US spec.

    Original Fire extinguisher.

    Box of goodies.

Essential reading for any Bus owner.

A view from below - I wasn't quite sure what to expect when this Bus arrived, I asked for many images (known problem areas) but this is amazingly solid.

Another. Mostly dust and mud. Will steam clean and Waxoil to protect...

Took the spare off and closed my eyes... Reopened - No dings/dents/rust. Impressive.

Took the grille off. Wasps/hornets and nest.

Inside rh bowl - says 832 (832nd Westy made? - no idea).

    Let there be light..

It was a cool 2 degrees by now. So I tidied up and had myself a cuppa.

Have ordered an indicator/hazard relay, number plate light unit, inner sliding door handle to get things in the right direction.

    Enjoy! : thumbs up :

  12. sad about the dozy one letting the cat out of the bag on facebook, but glad your missus likes it :) It is one sweet bus. Looks the same colour as Majorhangovers.

  13. It does look a similar colour as ours in some of those pics, but we're Ceylon Beige, think mike4 and chrisradioman (theres a picture or two of his bus on here somwhere) are mexico beige?

Did you get a new headlamp relay? as I dont think us spec has the ability to flash the headlamps. I know I had to fit a new one to mine but that was also due to the fact the old one was full of water :)

  14. nice bus, another beige 79 deluxe, ive just bought one very similar

If you buy a set of Securon seat belts, I'd purchase from VWH (not JK) as they give us a 5% discount for forum members, the code is latebay

better than no discount (plus VWH do a veriety of colours)

  17. : thumbs up : Thanks for that.. Just ordered. :D

I'd tick your karma up, but can't seem to.

  18. think you have to make 10 posts before you can add karma, nice looking bus.

  19. Update: New number plate light and sliding door handle.

Number Plate Light Unit - £19 from JK - http://www.justkampers.com/shop/number-plate-light-j10015.html
Can't fault it, seal is nice and tight, required a few minutes fiddling, but very happy once in place.

    :))

Sliding Door Inner Handle - £12.50 also JK - www.justkampers.com/shop/sliding-door-inner-handle-j11060.html
Seems ok - time will tell. I wasn't paying £2 or so for a cap for the handle so I made my own thanks to the laser cutter.. Top is 'cut out' bottom one is 'engraved'.
I included a recess for a flat headed screwdriver as the caps are 'push fit'.
Unsure whether to leave plain or paint beige to match the handle..

    To go:

Emergency flasher switch - I have indicators but no hazards so have bought another from VWH (with resistor for dash ligh dimmer).
Seatbelts - fitting tomorrow. Instructions are Marmitee.
Windscreen wiper motor - fuse blows when triggered.
MOT - dependant upon the above.
Jailbars - when it warms up...
Firetec Unit - Ordered today, thanks Jen.
Engine service - again, when it warms up!

  20. So I've spent the past week working on the van, getting the electrics sorted - finally solving many of the wiper faults ( http://thelatebay.com/index.php?topic=8199.0 ) then taking it down the local garage to get an MOT.

Well today and yest I was fortunate to have use of one of the set of ramps within the garage and potter away: So I dropped the oil, replaced plugs, points, condenser, dizzy cap, leads, oil filter, fuel filter, strainer, greased the front axle, lubed anything that moved and fitted a rear lap belt. By doing this, I can confidently say that I am more prepared should < insert issue > happen. The bus is in fantastic condition both inside and out, and solid below. It has 30yrs of dry dirt/dust which I will wire brush and then waxoil or redlead in the summer.

My van, on the ramps.. O0

So it passed the mot ;D , we even put the probe in it's rear end to check for issues.... Passed emissions too (although I believe a visual is fine for our vans?)

Monday I will drive down to Cardiff DVLA and take all the paper work to reg it. So hopefully it will be legally available to drive.

Next task: The horror that is the 'headunit hole' - absolutely butchered by the po. I'm too embarrassed for them to put a picture up.
