Gears 3, 4, reverse impossible to get

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Tracey Wacey, Sep 17, 2020.

  1. Hi our Winnie, T2 1979 bay, started having problems on our trip away. We lost 3,4 and reverse gears. It’s like 1st has moved to 3rd and 2nd to 4th positions. We managed to get back to our campsite in 2nd and have now been relayed home. Any ideas what we should be looking for as we are newbies and this was only our second trip away. Thanks for any helpful info

Sounds like the rear gear shift coupling has fallen apart.

climb underneath, just in front of the rear wheels, and look for a “Y” piece in the heater tube. In the middle of the y, you will see a shaft with a coupling on it. Give it a twist and see if it looks broken. Or take a pic of it and post it here.

Is the gear stick bolted down tight to the floor?

Most likely is that the screw that holds the gearbox coupler has come loose. If its missing completely then an m6 bolt will do, as you do it up you need to locate it in the dimple in the end of the gearchange rod coming forward from the gearbox.
Tighten it and then use wire off e.g. a Prosecco cork to tie it so it wont come undone.. The screw is visible at the top here...

Prosecco? I thought yacht owners only drank Champagne. :)

I take it you have renewed the oil seal since picture Mike .

  7. Yes we checked

  8. Ok. Can one of you slide underneath and find the coupling that Mike posted a picture of above? With someone watching that try selecting gears - see if it’s moving and if there is any play / slack.

Whereabouts are you. There may be someone local who might be able to assist.

Cant be bothered. The oil level doesnt drop, and compared with the way it used to spray out of the nearside axle stub seal and input shaft, its nothing.

The scabby underseal is more of a worry.

Well @1973daisey used a Bolly cork from the bar at Sandown Park. I was toning it down for the readers.

Mine I think is £30 Methode Champenois sparkling wine from Wickham Vineyard.

Well i suppose those red plastic inserts on the coupling are resilient to oil contamination , shame it doesn't splatter the oil on to the scabby underseal .

  12. And it was press conference wire I used and it's still in there today

The coupler is made from a VW coupler with EMPI polyurethane inserts. The entire body area round where the gearbox sprayed from the drive shaft is still quite well sealed with gearbox oil . It only got washed off finally in places when the fuel filler hose falling off washed it down in petrol.

When I finally decide to drop the engine for the slightly drippy crank seal, I will replace the gearbox nose seal too.
