Hi first time post, I have 1973 bay with 1600 dp fitted pretty stock, 34 pict 3 carb. After pulling the camper out during lockdown to add a solar panel i found the carb was not running correct withe engine cutting out when the chock came off.The only thing I did was fit an original oil bath filter. I now have the engine running pretty good after I stripped and rebuilt the carb but seems to be running lean on the motorway as the engine feels and smells hot but no Dash light coming on when the oil is to hot. The main concern is that my gearbox feels pretty hot to touch which is a concern, anybody any ideas
Not sure if it helps but mine ran hot , changed the gear oil and it was horrific , thick, gooey and very smelly ... awful . I haven’t run it on a long run to test properly but... it’s easy to change the oil and reckon you should do it regardless and see if it helps
Thanks for the response, I changed oil last year and it drives fine and changes gear also, but never noticed it being that hot, but never go under and check after a drive. I am concerned that something ready to go on gearbox or clutch. I also think I could be running lean at higher rpm. The love hate relationship continues with my bus.
Is there a temperature to start getting concerned I have not got a temperature gun but certainly I can only keep my hand on it for a few seconds after a 15 min drive. The tinware is hot also which makes me think the engine is working harder cause the gearbox might have an issue.
You can only hold it for seconds, also pulled my plugs and it was lean adjusted carb and they now look tan brown but still feels hot.
The box would probably be making various nasty noises way before it dies. You should see what the drag racers do to these gearboxes, tho to be fair they do break them quite regularly. Can you hear any gearbox related noises? Any whining, for example?
When my bus was overheating I couldn't touch the rear bumper it was so hot, because the gearbox is connected to the engine I wouldn't worry, sort out the timing, carb and make sure you have all the cooling system in order, my problem turned out to be my coil and timing
The gearbox loses say 10 horsepower .. which is 7.5 kW of heat. Spread over the gearbox it will get warm.. another reason it has ribs cast in... I used to know when my gearbox was warm because it would get a bit more likely to crunch changing down after anlong run. Changing for fresh fully synthetic oil which was less like treacle when cold, seems to have cured this, it stays about the same comparing setting off and at the end of the run.
Thanks for the response, I might try different oil and see if anything improves, I might buy the heat gun so I can get an Idea what temperature I am running at for more knowledge and compare after a few different runs
Depends on your exhaust but my JK single quiet pack has a 4 into 1 collector with two exhaust tubes almost touching the rear tin. It gets too hot to touch normally.
Only once on my life have I felt how warm my gearbox was after use, can't even remember why! Probably adjusting the clutch cable.
Hard to tell gearbox change as normal no different during drive but sounds like a drone at 60 mph, not sure if is Monza 4 tip exhaust that I fitted over winter
Can the clutch cause this it’s 10 years old but on ly done about 40000 miles. Bite seems midway but could be something else to try
If you concerned, why not change the gearbox oil? If what comes out has a metallic sheen, or worse, bits of metal in it, then is creme crackered. Damaged gears are usually dead obvious.
Ah, no, I meant in 25 years including 8 years mending vans full time I've only felt a recently run gearbox once and that was only last year. It was warm, you could almost say hot and it was just rebuilt and full of fresh oil. I think the problem is that you noticed they get hot. It's normal.
Probably right how often would you go under and feel the gearbox after a drive, will keep an eye on things and if I develop a problem I will post and make people aware.
