I think you’re talking about an inertia switch; it cuts the pump supply in the event of an impact. Deefer66 has a fuel cut off valve - not the same thing.

  3. ^this. The things in the boot of old Sierras were “crash” switches, possibly with a ball bearing and a spring in them.

Modern cars do (depressingly) appear to have a crash signal from one of the ECUs, driven off an accelerometer.

  4. I was assuming my crash would stop the engine so pump and cut off come in...

The engine wouldn't stop if you had an automatic transmission.

Rule 1. You must never crash for obvious reasons.

If someone crashes into the back of you that's not so bad and the engine would probably stop if it was serious enough to cause a petrol leak?

  7. It was called an inertia switch, no need of one if you fit the engine activated fuel pump relay, does the same job.

  8. Been working my way thru this job, got one for the Bug too, seems to have taken me ages :(

Not quite the same job; one stops the fuel pump if the engine stops, the other stops the fuel pump if the car stops – suddenly.

Yeah, I was thinking more of an inertia cut off ..... I do have an automatic.

  11. You can get inertia switches meant for landrovers that look quite an easy mod guess it's just go in line with the feed for the pump.

Might you be over thinking this?

  15. Been doing some @snotty style knitting myself :) Great idea to have two relay blocks, Snotty  :hattip:

I wish you'd all quit it with the relay blocks.

I've got heaps of them badly mounted throughout the engine bay - 2 are zip tied to the Voltage regulator.

  17. Very neat...but might get dowsed with rain coming through the vents?

All the cool kidz have relay sockets, Steve

Maybe if I wait long enough zip straps will come back into fashion.

  19. Hmm, hadn't thought of that. Good point, I don't know how far water or how much water gets in there. I left some length in the tails so it could be moved. I was struggling to mount it higher and keep the relays facedown. Also, I have an aversion to making holes in perfectly good bodywork.
