You can lead a horse but i cant remember the rest of the phrase..... Its just that i'm 50/50 on way to go on it. Mech means bump starts and less wiring and faffing plus can adjust press. Elec means stuck with flat bat..and i seem to do that a lot!
If the battery is so flat it can’t power a 3 or so amp pump your not going to get much of a spark from the coil
Be careful when recharging those cheap Chinese jump packs. Been there & don’t want to repeat the experience
That explains why mine fits both 6mm and 8mm . Buy a cheap pressure gauge from fleaBay. You're only going to use it once. Tee it off with a blue Tefen nylon connector. Only takes 20 mins to check the fuel pressure. About to check mine so that if poss I can get rid of the Malpassi. Nowt wrong with it, but takes an eternity to fill the filter bowl up if the system's drained down. A mech pump's a lot easier to fix at the roadside if it packs up. But...as above, check your float bowls aren't overflowing.
Keep a potentially troublesome mechanical pump if you want to but don’t use an inability to bump start as a reason – you still can. And if you’re frequently stuck with a flat battery maybe you need a ‘light on’ alarm – snotty has a luverly ding dong bong.
If you set the fuel pressure on your drive, then drive up a long motorway hill as fast as you can and it starts to conk out but recovers if you ease off the throttle - turn it up a bit more. I watched a chap do mine on a rolling road, he set to 3psi, sped up under full throttle high load and it plummeted. He then adjusted it so it was just rising slowly - all in a few seconds before it ran short of fuel.
I have a single Weber progressive that used to leak every 15000 miles because of vibration from the cooling fan and engine. And no regulator as I was using an OG pump until it started leaking gently from the base. I briefly used an aftermarket pump while the OG pump was still working, keeping the OG pump as spare, but that seemed to pulse about 1.5 PSI higher than the VW stock pump. I have a +/-1 bar gauge and a T piece and a short hose section I push on to the outlet of the fuel pump. I also use the gauge to measure manifold vacuum to work out the calibration for the MAP sensor I have.
That may - may - explain my conking out last year. Turned my Malpassi down to 2.5psi “just to be sure”. Later, carbs ran dry full blast up a hill on the M27.
Ok thanks for all your advice guys. I'm gonna go with the machine7 malpassi regulator and a cheap guage to set the fuel pressure and see where it takes me- seems simpler on fuel line adapters and less work. I will order this week and post results. Thanks again to all for your wise words.
SSP mechanical pump Installed 3 to 3.5psi No problems on yesterdays 220 mile run up to 70mph at times.
I used to be in decisive but now I'm not so sure...! So I ended up talking myself out of the mech pump through fear of fuel leaks into the oil system and buggered bearings on my rebuild so I went for the webcon electric pump which I'll try to hook up with the relay. Should be here some time next week and I'll let u know how it pans out. Cheers all. Think I will leave the old pump in situ with some tape over the inlet/outlet for emergency hook up if the lucky fails or is that a bad idea ...?
Here's the setup I'm working on. Cut off solenoid linked to Aircooled works extinguisher linked to electric faucet pump. Instant shutoff from fuel source/pump and regulated supply to twin dell's via king malpassi. Also allows for hidden cut off switch. Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk
