Fuel injection return

  1. @pkrboo what do you do about the tank I’ve read (may be wrong) that the outlet on a standard tank is to small so is there a solution also I know I can get a return in the fill neck pipe but I’m just wondering weather or not to factor a new fuel injection tank into the shopping list. Or do you use a swirl tank thanks for any answers you can give me cheers Ian.

  2. I have fitted new fuel injection tanks,(luckily most of the ones I have done were already fuel injection tanks from the factory) they have 2 8mm outlets from the tank for feed and return. An FI tank has a small baffled area around the outlets too, to help stop any cavitation issues. For the money I'd just get a new tank.

Early tanks with a screw on outlet can be changed from 6mm to 8mm then fit a return into the filler neck.

  3. Mines a 73 so there a chance it’s a 6mm ok will price a new tank any recommendations?

  4. They are all made by the JP group, so wherever is cheapest. VW heritage was about £235 last time I looked

  6. Picked up a new fuel injection tank off fleebay today for £200 so that’s that sorted think I will need a new float /reader as it may be different from mine.

  7. Think there the same from memory the early one are different like a canstister i think late one is a bar with a plastic float

  8. Mine is a 73 so not sure if that’s the same or a canister version will find out when I pull the tank

  9. Just had a thought
I thought I read something somewhere that all you did to get around this was put a t piece on the fuel tank outlet then one end to the fuel pump then the other to the fuel return

  10. Yeh I’ve read that as well somewhere but I will still have the issue of changing the outlet size and the lack of baffles that can cause fuel starvation when cornering to fast don’t want to have to strip it out again later so for 200 do it whilst it’s out and be done with it. If my tank is in good condition I should get 50/70 pounds for it the fuel return that goes in the filler pipe is £50 then upgrading the outlet just better to bite the bullet

you will need a tank fitted with the same type of sender that you already have as other wise your gauges will not work properly.

  12. So if mine is the early sender and the new tank takes the later sender i assume that the fitment is different so what's the answer new gauge ?

A early tube type dampens the signal so the needle doesn’t bounce around at the sender where as a late lever type does it at the gauge end.
The sender fixings are different and if you want to change the gauge you’re would have to change the whole dash binnacle as the backing plate the gauge fits to is different

  14. Just need to hope when i open it up that i have the later style then lol

  15. Is there any way to tell from the gauge end ?

  16. So looking at the change over dates it says that the early style is upto Feb 1973 my bus certificate says it was built in May 1973 so I'm hoping it will already be the later style but as we know with these machines anything is possible lol.
