Floor pan fitting

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by andybay, Jan 13, 2021.

  1. All you guys that have fitted full floor can you help?
I will shortly be welding in the RH floor panel but offering it up, there is a big gap between the c post and the floor pan. Is this normal?

Also what are these holes for? Should I weld them up?

Should these holes end up central in the floor pan? And what are they for?

The holes are factory, they have little bugs to fill them but I don’t know what they are for as they just go to the outside, bear in mind you are fitting a LHD floor to a RHD van, make sure both floor halves go in and any holes like you have make infill pieces, the the bit inside the rear 1/4, touching the outer skin and the B pillar part hard up against it?

  3. Thanks for the reply davidoft. Yes the bit inside the rear quarter is touching the outer skin and the b piller cut out on the infill piece is hard up against it although I haven’t welded the infill piece to the floor panel yet. It looks like the rear quarter has been repaired in the past so may not be exactly in the right place. The return piece on the floor pan is hard up against the wheel tub too though which looks like it is original metal.

Should the LH edge of the floor panel end up exactly in the middle of the top hats? (ie exactly in the centre above the gear shift tube?)

What is the best way to mark up and cut out the excess piece around the door threshold on the LH floor pan to make sure I get that in the right place? Then I can trial fit the LH floor pan to check they both fit correctly.

Sorry for all the questions I just want to make sure I don’t ruin £300 worth of panels

There is always that gap around the C pillar.
The halves overlap so I doubt one edge of either is exactly central.

  5. Thank you, I guess it must be in the right place then. What is the best way to mark up and cut out the excess piece around the door threshold on the LHfloor pan to make sure I get that in the right place?

From memory I positioned the floor in the van, marked the floor from underneath along the length of the inner sill and then added on the extra needed to take it to the threshold.
Cut it bigger than you need and then you can always trim it down gradually.

    Carefully? :)
It is something I've done, I think trim a bit at a time when you're ready to fit it, I don't believe there is any secret or available measurements. It's certainly easier to fit a lefty floor to a lefty bus!

More than likely that I did as James suggests and marked what I could from underneath.

  8. Ok, thank you James. I will go with that technique then. Did you weld up all the holes in the floor pan or did you find any of them useful for anything?

  9. Thank you Zedders, I will give that a go

look at the floor haves , at the centre ( though it’s been a while) one in indented to accept the other half, for the first half, lay the 2nd half in , see where they lay, trim a bit at a time where the touch the pillars of until it fits, there is no trick, it’s just trial fitting trimming and repeat

Of the holes you have pictures of above I just put some rubber bungs in them. I did weld up the big holes though (the one towards the front in the below pic):

  12. Ok, thank you I shall do the same then.

  13. Ok, thank you for the advice I will give that a go then

  14. @JamesLey, was it the rust buster 121 epoxy mastic you sprayed your chassis with?

I used the bilt hamber stuff on my bay underside. It is quite expensive for what it is though.
For my bug I'm just using an epoxy primer from my local paint shop (paint brand is Lechler), I think I paid about £80 for 5 litres which ends up being half the price per litre of the bilt hamber stuff.

The Jotun Barrier 2K zinc rich epoxy primers are worth a look.
