You'd be surprised how tough powdercoat is. Mine are powdercoated too and still look good 4 years on.
Its a spare and was cheap but its ok where it matters ... i spy your 914 grills ;-) Black Powdercoat is 100% the way to go on engine tins . i hope your paint tin lid fits now .....
Thought you’d spot those grills! Missed them last time round. Agree - blasting and powder coating is so worth paying for… most parts look like new again.
Really satisfying when the powder coating meets the electroplating. And the mystery of how the the plastic seal round the alternator fits is finally solved!
Question - did these little tabs that hold the air flap spindle thing in place get deleted or are they missing from my ‘78 CJ?
Yes, them’s the little fellas. Yours look new, or are they original? Are they spring steel? Pretty sure the ones on the 914 are just plain mild steel but too cold to go and check right now!
New ones are NLA, from VW at least. I made replacements from a bit of stainless-steel shim, been fine for 12 years or so and I don’t think they need to be spring steel although the original ones might have been.
Just started thinking about putting this engine back together and run into a problem straight away! First job is to build up crank with the bearing and gear wheels. I've had the crank reground at 0.25mm undersize on all the journals and I've got corresponding 0.25 oversize bearings. But when I dry fit the No 3 bearing there just seems to be too much radial play for comfort. I've miked the crank it's spot on 59.75mm (but I will check this again tomorrow). And the ID of the bearing is 59.83mm. This gives a clearance of 0.08 which is in spec (the spec being between 0.05 and 0.10mm according to Bentley). If someone could conform my interpretation of the specs that would be great. So is it normal to feel a bit of play, particularly being able to rock the bearing in situ? Am I just paranoid??
Are you wiggling them dry? Don't forget you'll have a small clearance for the oil film they run on. Give 'em a good splosh of engine oil and try again. You'll likely find the small amount of "play" has gone.
