Fitting DRLA carbs 2.0 Type 4

Discussion in 'How To' started by aussie bay, Aug 14, 2013.

  1. This thread is more of a "How I did it" than a "How to do it"
It will be updated over the next few days so please be patient :)

    First of all the carbs
    [IMG]

    I chose DRLA 40's

But this should be very similar for all conversions

First of all there are no vacuum ports for the servo

So some suitable fixings are required. I bought barbed threaded hose connectors but found them to be a bit long as I wanted to use the existing pipework. So I went to the local hose supplier and got these

They also supplied the sealing washers that will withstand any heat.

Next I trial fitted the manifolds to see where the rubber elbows would sit, marked the manifolds and centre punched where to drill

    then drilled a pilot hole

and opened it out to 11mm and tapped the m12 thread for the fixing

    Fixing screwed in

All swarf cleaned out and carb fitted so you can see how it is

  2. Next the rubber elbow was fitted

I chose to use hose clips to make sure the elbows cant ever come off.
Manifolds were then fitted to engine. I used 12mm headed nuts as 13mm won't go on.
    Servo pipe fitted

    Repeat for the other side.

Next I started on the fuel lines. I chose 8mm internal diameter stainless braided marine quality fuel line.

Then using P clips I secured the fuel line

Coming soon, finishing the fuel lines and fitting the oil breather pipes and tank vent pipes, linkage and air filters etc

  3. The fuel line needed to be cut to the required length once i was happy with the routing. Wrap the hose with tape where you need to cut
    [IMG]

Then using a 1mm cutting disc on an angle grinder simply cut through leaving a nice unfrayed edge
    [IMG]

    Pipe routed to Tee piece
    [IMG]

Repeat for other carb to other side of tee.

Next the oil breather pipe was connected to the top of the o/s air filter cover
    [IMG]
    and then fitted to carb
    [IMG]

Next the linkage was fitted, quite simple really but I did have to use a thread cleaner for the grub screws.
I connected the linkage and have left the adjusters at the longest setting so they can be adjusted at the end of the install
    [IMG]

Just got the tank breathers to connect and then the adjustments

That's looking good. What carbs did you have before?

Same as me. Lots of details and costings please and your before and after impressions. You're now the official Australian van Guinea pig.

I've tentatively added a pair to my Xmas list. Haven't put a price next to them ;)

  10. I had a pair on my Aussie bay.Made a difference on torq and acceleration.Had a bit of a flat spot but this can be sorted with different jetting to how the carbs are supplied.I am sure there have been a few threads about jetting on here.

    Looking good.:)

  11. I've got some DRLAs that have been sat in the garage for about ten years. I really should get around to fitting them!

Where did you get the manifold/linkage/air filter kit from? What's the quality like?

What did you do about jetting them, did you get recommendations or maybe your waiting for a rolling road session?

  12. manifolds and linkage is all from eurocarb, they recommended venturi and jet sizes too
will be going on rolling road as soon as funds allow

  13. i have been having a few issues with the fueling and there is quite a bit of backfiring up through the carbs.
one side seemed to be a lot worse than the other. I took the right inlet manifold off again and found the gasket was catching on the tinware, possibly causing air to be drawn in. the new gaskets are a bit bigger than the original metal ones
A bit of fiddling around with the tinware and the backfire is all but gone
Next step is to block off the servo pipes to rule out any air ingress from there.
Also found the float heights needed tweeking a bit as it was over fueling

  14. I finished off the tank breathers today, extending the metal pipe from the near side right across the engine bay
    [IMG]
And into the bracket on the off side
    [IMG]

I put a tee piece behind it and shortened the original pipe
    [IMG]

Then teed it into the oil breather pipe
    [IMG]

Here you can see how I have left it for now, I have run out of hose clips and I am going to secure the pipes in place

    Neat. :)

  16. @aussie bay . How you getting on with the carbs mate. Just about to do the same install. Think Ive got my basic settings sorted. Any further info on jetting - venturi sizes etc?

  17. i just went with eurocarb's recommendations, i can remember the venturis were 28, but i cant recall the jet sizes.
the bus drives a lot smoother, pulls away nicely and goes great on the motorway
it's going for a rolling road session as soon as funds allow

  18. thanks for the update. Im thinking my venturis are a bit big at 32 and I might lose torque lower down. Will see how i get on with that

I have 29's. :) I'd go a little bigger if you like thrashing. As you have them why not see what happens. In a few weeks time you'll bae able to remove and rejet them in 4 minutes flat.
I've noted I can plug in a lambda sensor (£20 on ebay) into my exhaust and get the output on a meter (£10 from hong kong on ebay). That should sort it.

  20. Got onto eurocarb who recommended 30's for mine. Guess i will try what I have. I notice their spec gives a venturi to main ratio of 4 and not the 4.5 people seem to use.
    As below:
    30 chokes (vents)
    122 mains
    58 idles
    9164.2
    180 airs
    35 pumps
Using that ratio I would be looking at 130 mains with the 32s!!?
