Fitting a recon engine 1600tp

  1. Oh yeah, don't rub it in :p

  2. No offence taken mate, I got loads of advice on here when I was putting my engine back in, unfortunately many (?) of those that did advise have left and gone to the other side

  3. Decided to block the road with my car to boost my battery while I try.
Anyway, thought any flooding would of cleared from earlier today, so cranking over and over and over , almost went a couple of times but that's it.
Checked for a spark on plug 2, no spark.
How the hell can it have no spark, it was running the other day?
    Ffs

  4. Nevermind, the 2 kicks you gave it showed it who's boss. It might be better tomorrow. :hattip:Fingers & toes crossed. Mini-techenders at the weekend anyone? I still have lots of biscuits that need rehoming...

  5. Instead of mini T/e, let's have a communal free for all smash the *****ing thing up party, once we've kicked the Marmite out of every panel, set fire to it

  6. Have you got a Chinese You Get Extra Rong Time You Numba Wun Sexy Johnny electronic distributor? Have you got an old one with breakers you can try.

  7. Yes it's one of t hose £50 jobbies of eBay , electronic ignition vac advance, o34.
But it ran the other day, I just don't understand it.
But yes I have my old 009 with points

  8. This - get the b`stard running !!

Also , invest a fiver for a can of Easy-start and bang a couple of squirts down the carb - much better as it won`t foul the plugs

    :hattip:

  9. Is it still going round? The dizzy hasn't lifted where you loosened it ?

You might be suffering the broken ignition switch syndrome - when the switch is in the start position the ignition is off because of a broken switch. Then when the switch is in the run position the ignition is on. If you let go of the key at the right instant it will start as you let go of the key with the engine still spinning from the starter.

I can come over and take a look if you like on Sat or Sun.

You said on the other thread that you had a spark from the king lead (coil HT) but not at the plugs – this suggest a problem with the distributor cap or rotor arm. Check that the carbon brush in the cap hasn’t dropped out and make sure the cap is located properly on the distributor body.

It sounds like you’ve buggered the 009 so put the electronic distributor back and try again and if you still have the original cap and rotor arm, as supplied with the cheapo distributor, they’re poor quality and worth changing.

The engine is very basic, you don’t need to be an expert to get it going and you will succeed. Don’t sell it.

  12. If its sparking at the king lead, then either the dizzy cap or rotor arm must be duff. I've had two of those 'cheap' ones (£50 doesn't feel that cheap, but it is for a whole dizzy) as I'm a bit dim and didn't learn the first time. One only had one advance spring in it, so it ran fully advanced all the time, the other had a cap that didn't always touch the rotor arm - coughed and ran a bit then died.

So you could stick the old 009 on - it ran your old engine fine, so you know it is good.

You could also test your other dizzy. Remove it from the block, its only one nut and a good pull, but leave the cap and leads on, remove sparking plugs and earth them. With the ignition on you should be able to spin the dizzy shaft by hand and watch each plug spark (or not) in turn. I was going to say don't give yourself a shock, but you appear to be a man impervious to danger....

I've been through the new engine 'why won't you start' dance twice, it sucks and you loose faith it will ever run, but as above these engines are simple, so there will be a simple reason it won't start again. Don't get bogged down in everything having to be perfect for it to run - you old engine managed it on 3 cylinders with a whole load of broken bits so its not some tiny thing you need to find like tiny tweak of valve gaps, it will be a major issue like lack of spark, timing massively massively out out some issue with fuel delivery - too much possibly if it flood easily.

And take @mikedjames up on his offer! He might be able to see the wood through all the trees where frustration is meaning you can't Jez.
This time last year Clem died on my driveway after I reversed about 2 yards. Turning over but no sparky and definitely no starty. Initial cause it turned out, was a small bit of crud blocking the carb jet. A good bash got rid of that eventually, but in the process of finding this out ( much removal of leads, plugs and anything else electronic) I must've knocked the timing way out and that was why it wouldn't start. Eventually timed it by ear just to get the ruddy thing going ( line up rotor arm with notch on dizzy and tdc for cylinder 1, ignition on, cap and leads all in place, rotate gently until I heard the points 'crack' , if I've remembered right and someone will hopefully correct me if I haven't) it was enough to get it going to be timed properly, and saved me thumping it again.
Between all the soton-ites on here, we must have enough known good bits to lend and get Freya going?

  14. Good on ya boris
Pop over and lift the lad out of his stress and misery

  15. Another try.

Gone through what people have suggested, finally, using the new elec dizzy, old cap and old rotor I am finally now getting a spark. At plug 2 and 3 , I only checked them two. (So brand new cap and arm seem to have instantaneously failed ?? )
I (think......) I have reset tdc, connected everything back up, activate choke. Start to turn it over. Not firing. I give it some gas. It tries to fire up but after 3 or 4 seconds gives up and just turns over again.
    Leave it a while.
Try again. Don't touch the throttle, turns over won't fire. Give it some gas. There's a noise coming from in the engine somewhere on each revolution , you know when you outside a nightclub and can hear the muffled thump of bass, its like that.
So I leave the throttle alone, but keep ctranking over, the noise stops (or at least Its nowhere near as noticeable), still won't fire.
Then I notice as its turning over I'm getting hit by a blast FROM the snout of the air cleaner box. This is felt through 3 t shirts, a hoodie, and a thick hivis work coat, so quite powerful.
Obviously not right, so remove air box , try cranking again to see what happens and the same "explosion" comes out the top of the carb.

    Gavre up now.

    Good news on the spark
as for the blow back your timings out so it fires with the inlet valve open

  17. Most likely is plug leads on in the wrong order to give this...

  18. I am with plug leads in wrong order, different between 009 and vacuum dizzy by about 90 degrees I think?

  19. Do you have home start or pay a monthly fee on a bank account that gives breakdown. If so give em a call. Get them to diagnose the problem then fob them off and fix it.
