  5. tore a gasket late on last night so didn't get it filled with oil. Off to GSF today

  6. All in an finished but IT WILL NOT START. As far as I can see I've got fuel(plugs are wet). I've got spark. Plug out and earthed against case
    I've got it timed right.
Rotor points at lead that goes to number one. Mark on wheel is at tdc and the next valve to open is exhaust. I set the timing using a voltmeter and turning the dizzy then locked it up until I get it running then I'll do it with a light

What have I missed? Feeling very down as I've worked my nuts off over the last week to get to this point.

You put the distributor drive in 180 degrees out. Was it really TDC No 1 when you dropped the drive in or just pointing the right way ? Because it rotates at half the speed of the crank there are two possibilities.

Time for pencil jammed in the top of the drive or a strong magnetic pickup tool ...

Or swapped No1 and No2 leads. Look at the pictures on the last pages of Muir ....

  8. ^^^ whs. that's what I did even when I thought I'd checked and double checked it! I ended up watching the rockers through a full cycle so I knew I was at tdc on no1, then took dizzy cap off and low and behold, it was pointing at no3!!!

Stop and have a bloody good think. You have to run the cam in so you want it to start straight away. Post up some pics you never know?

  10. When does the exhaust valve start to open? It shouldn't be (roughly) until you hit BDC (or TDC for cyl4.)

...turning the engine clockwise looking from the back of bus

You wouldn't think I wrote (content and programming) all the Windows help files for a direct mail targeting program. And some music for when customers were put on hold. Funny what we do if asked.

  15. It starts to open a couple of degrees after bdc

  16. I've had HT leads on in four different ways starting with one in a different spot each time followed 4 3 2. I've tried a different coil

    Plugs are wet.
Carbs are new. Could they be causing this

  17. Can't get pics at mo
I am using another phone without photo bucket on it

  18. what carbs have you put on?

    It did run with them
    On but only once and
roughly because of the cam before the rebuild

If you static timed it you might be 45 degs out - easily done. Your vac can should be in the way of the distributor clamp M8 bolt if that helps.

Assistant to turn the key while you point the timing light and adjust - it'll start as the mark approaches the right place.
