Finally got one

  1. Hi all,
Been scouring the forums for a few weeks now as we wanted a van to sort out over winter to get ready for the summer and finally found one.
We hired a 1977 Westfalia for a week last year and have wanted one since.

This one is a 1974 Westfalia but the roof appears to be different to most so I'm guessing aftermarket.

Got it home yesterday, found a load of problems already so I'll be looking to sort those out if I can. First problem was filling it with petrol, a large percentage of which ended up on the floor, got me home in one go though, 123 miles in about 2 & 3/4 hours.
And I had no idea the screenwash bottle needed pressurising!

    Cheers

  3. I'm going to climb underneath and have a look, was concerned it would lose the lot and not get home. Also the oil went from the max to about half way down over the trip, not sure if that's normal or I've an oil leak. I do remember topping up the hired one but to be honest I've no idea, time to learn

I think Owen is right. That looks like a Devon roof and non factory windows!

    More pictures needed!

If it’s pouring fuel out you were lucky to get it home at all.
Have a look at the “beware of fire” thread and I wouldn’t drive it again until you’ve sorted the leak...

Was it on a slope when you checked it.

  8. I'd say thats a full on Devon as they are devon windows and the roof is defantly devon ..what's the interior like any picks ... but looks good so far and don't worry they can answer any questions you may have on here ..

  9. Cheers guys, I though Devon but then the interior has the Westfalia tag on

I've also got a pile of receipts, for everything including clutch, bearings, exhaust etc from 2014 but in there is one for something called "short eng" for £1,625, any idea what that could be?

All the mechanical receipts from 2014 have the same name as the buyer and I've got the V5 sheet he filled in, would it be weird to contact him and ask him what was done?

I'm going to take it to VW workshop in South Shields or LVH in Northumberland to check it over

    It's a westfalia SO70/1/2 continental interior.

They sometimes used Dormer roof' s but always had factory windows.

Devon did do some deals with westfalia, I don't know if they ever used their interiors though.

It is more like a Devon with a westy interior than a westy with Devon roof.

Does it have the round Devon Beaver badge on the tailgate?

  16. Pretty flat on both occasions, but couldn't see any obvious leaks and I put a sheet under it over night

  19. It's been resprayed in 2014 so no badges but the front one, also they've not put everything back like the hooks for the front hammock

  20. I might have another go, it was exactly to the max line when I set off though

The photo attached is the engine when I set off, I think I have noticed some oil under the filler cap since I got back though.
