Final Answer: Best Carb for a 2lt...34ICT or 40IDF (ignoring all others)

  1. So I have 2 litre stock motor which has had a single weber for years and I want to treat it...need to decide between these and order monday.

    I'm between these 2. I want the best for set up/maintenance ease, power, fuel consumption (unless you tell me its massively noticeable and I will get 28mm jets.

    Both will be from eurocarb, either will have fresh fuel lines and a regulator too. Which do i get?

    They both work, IDF's if money isn't an issue.
    DRLA40's are a smoother drive, so they say.

    The thing with the dual single barrel carburettor is you still suffer from uneven idling as the cylinders draw fuel in pairs. 4-3 then 2-1 ... the 2 x2 barrel solution is the next best thing to fuel injection. Except 40 mm carburettors may be large on a low revving engine leading to never finding the best tune , while the dual single barrels are a better match to the engine size and rpm.


    Both will work so much better than a progressive, just you will transition from a total lack of heat and lurching around to fuel boiling in the carbs and not starting on hot days if you dont fit insulating manifold gaskets.

    A choke per cylinder is better than a choke shared between two cylinders and 40 IDF’s with 28 vents will work well. Theoretically they’re a bit big for a 2.0l, 34 ICT’s are a bit small but will also work.

    40 IDF’s with a bellcrank linkage is probably as good as you can get.:thumbsup:

  9. Never really got my head around that fully.. only one cylinder at a time can use it, and only half as many jets to get wrong.. still went with drla36's would have been rude not to

  10. I have Dells with a CB Performance linkage, I am not super keen on the linkage, first time out this year and the grub screw holding the down link to the carb's cross bar came loose. I had the carbs off during the winter to replace the needle valves. Anyway the result was the down link was free to move along the cross bar at one end. It slid towards the carb end jamming wide open the throttle on #1 and # 2, while #3 and #4 was shut. I put the hazards on and took a look at the noisy cupboard. It was obvious that there was a problem with the throttle, but not the exact issue. I managed to limp to a safer place, not a pleasant experience. Once I had regained my composure and was safe, I worked out what had gone wrong, reset the linkage and tried to tighten the grub screw. Would it tighten, would it lychee, 4mm Allen too big, 3mm Allen too small :mad:.

    Turns out CB used imperial parts :mad::mad:. I ask you, on a lycheeing metric Bus. 1/8 " grub screw? unbelievable.....The whole thing may go over Snotty's fence if it does it again and I'll get a CSP one instead, least that will be metric.

    Think what’s happening to the fuel/air mix flying out the bottom of the carb changing direction from one cylinder to the other. It works but it’s not so good as if it didn’t need to change direction.

    And one jet going wrong is half the engine instead of a quarter.

    The ICT'S eventually suffer from air leaks at the butterfly shafts, the weber idf's don't suffer from this issue. Dell drla's don't either.
    So if your going to keep the van, expect this issue to eventually happen down the line.

  14. I looked at them, love the one on the Bug, was thinking about the crossbar one :thinking:

    When I saw Lisa's CSP bell crank linkage at the last TE, I was surprised to see it fouled the heater outlet on the fan shroud. Not a problem on my Bug, no heaters, but it surprised me nonetheless. I don't know if it was down to how it was fitted, however.

  16. Possibly. Mine just about clears the outlet on the RHS. But it does clear it with Dellortos. Will depend on your carb throttle arms?

    If you get a centremount, worth getting the optional return spring at the base as well.
