Morning all, My speedometer doesn't work....just one of the many things on my to-do list!! Looking at the MOT history of 500 miles-ish a year for 15 years+......I'm suspicious the previous owner used to disconnect it (in an old-fashioned pull it out, keep the mileage down sort of scam!) as I know for a fact they used it alot! I've never investigated a speedo before, where would be a good place to start? Thanks all Phil
Check it’s fixed to the back of the speedo. Check it’s fixed under the cap on the front near side wheel. If it is fixed at both ends, chances are the cable has snapped. Replacing it doesn’t take 15 minutes.
Its probably the cable that has broken/snapped. The best way to test is to take the cap off on the passenger side wheel and attach a drill to the cable. Run the drill anti clockwise to simulate the wheel turning. You can undo the other end to see if the cable is spinning. Also check the cable is seated correctly in the cap and the hole in the cap hasn't rounded off. If all this is good it may be the expensive bit ☹
First step: stick your hand up behind the dash and make sure it is actually connected behind the speedo
I wouldn’t take any notice of mileage anyway, is the trip not working or is the speedo not showing travelling speed
It's speed and odo that are faulty.... I was suspicious about the cable as the lady I bought it from had it for 15 years, and in spite of using it alot, it only ever did 500 miles a year!
My speedo is fairly accurate but noticed that the odometer is not accurate - I think it sticks sometimes or maybe a bit of cog is jumping/missing tooth - which probably explains why I sometimes get only 20 mpg instead of the normal 25
She had two choices when selling it "Oh yes, we use it a lot, we love it" or " we've only averaged 500 miles a year because it's always off the road being fixed and it drinks petrol". Maybe. @Dubs You remember Krazy Katey? who only used her van to drive to the MOT and back or to get it repaired for....years.
Start with the speedo drive in the hub and the cable connection at the speedo then check the cable is actually working
Yep! She kept it going for a year, or possibly two, after you closed as well. The last time I saw it, it was delivered to me on a flatbed as it wouldn't start due to the inevitable flat battery.. it was also full to the roof with shed junk and rats living in the back..
She was very nice but as timid as a sparrow. She had a very nice summer in her van and ever after hung onto it.
I'm guessing she was kidding herself that she would use it more next year.... a bit like I do to be fair...
But yes she was nutty in a nice way. One year it was green algae instead of yellow and had graffiti sprayed on the side. I spent a couple of hours of my own time getting it all off and making it look nice. I scrubbed the whole bus with 2k thinners, nothing else would shift it. Came up lovely. It seemed a shame to go to all that trouble and stop short of a tank of petrol to go somewhere.
Many I suspect. Many cats. Archeology type person, not digging but I think the year she was a roaring success socially was at a dig where her camper got her into many amusing predicaments like backing through a hedge into a ditch an so forth. Really, she should have stuck at it, she was ideal owner in many ways.
