The vintage speed is basically a big can, most if not all the damping is in that enormous tailpipe.
They are - as James's video shows deep throated but if you floor it they are quite loud, depending on your engine.
Mine was 2L 40X35 C35. Because I scuffed it up and painted it, you can see on the tailpipe where the damping is.
I'm also toying with a new exhaust for my type-4 but I can't quite bring myself to buy another VS after the first two had to be returned after less than 2,000 miles. That's not to mention having to weld some of it together because the flanges are so bendy as you see. When I say weld some, I mean weld all of it together. I sold the 3rd replacement without fitting it. And the engine. :)

I would expect The python to sound more grown up?

Sorry, I’m not really interested in the noise; its what other people listen to that are behind me. What’s interesting to me is that it is efficient and well made, in complete contrast to the Empi that is extremely inefficient and very poorly made. Of course, you could buy 4 or 5 Empi exhausts for the price of the CSP, but I’ll never have to buy another one.

    Thanks for that information.

Your experience with VS shows poor quality. They sound nice on tickover, but not sure I like the idea of loudish on acceleration.

What would you go for next on your type 4?

Mr westy and I both have bigger engines but they are very different. Mine is low revving, his is normal revving or maybe a little higher if he wants. He has more need and justification for a good exhaust and if had his engine I would have a python too.

I have a stock exhaust but it's hampering the engine a bit. I need something £between - the VS would suit my wallet and handle my extra capacity, but rather crudely for the money IMO and I'd rather give it someone who made a good exhaust than a shiny one. But good ones cost £ and so I just dream for now.

Maybe the character of sound you like is only obtainable with a crap exhaust. :D

Yeh, like the look of these and videos shows they are indeed comparatively quiet.

JK look like they also do a stainless steel version of the one I have, so twin quiet pack. Sounds interesting, but I guess folk will point out rust...

My exhaust which is the same as yours has lasted 8 years ...go for another and there cheap ....only knock i have on them is the possible induction of exhaust entering the rear of the bus due to the short stub tail pipes immediately underneath getting inside bringing in exhaust to the fan, driving it into the heating system ( type 4 ) and getting in the rear hatch if seal is absolutely not perfect fit .
But sound the best especially on deceleration at relativity low speed .

Yeh, agree. I think they complement a flat 4. Don’t look the best when they age.
