At the end of last year i got invited to the doc's for an over 40's health check and was told i was overweight, had high blood pressure and my cholesterol was not terrible but a bit high, anyway i started eating a bit healthier dropping off the beer and crisps etc and walking for an hour before work, went back to the doc in feb and was told it was getting way better and to keep it up, however i've now got to the point where i'm really enjoying excersise and wanting more and am now seriously thinking of giving up the beer totally unless it's a camping night or birthday etc, (i've not touched a drop since 20 feb) i now walk 4 miles before work then ride 5 miles to work then walk another 4 miles in my lunch hour then ride 5 miles home from work, so the pro's are i feel better and no doubt am healthier but the cons are i'm looking more at healthy food and dropping out things i enjoy 'cos i'm turning into a label nerd and being influenced by the "it's bad for you brigade" how do you decide when being health concious starts being counter productive because you start spiteing yourself because you think things are bad for you? moderation is the key i know but is there something in your mind/body that tells you to turn into a health freak? i've heard of people becoming addicted to excersise and although i'm not that bad i can feel a radical change in my lifestyle and wonder if it's some sort of midlife crisis.
I think you have answered your own question by realising it might become a case of you are now a "Gillian McKeith" I'm told the best diet / way to lose weight and stay healthy is cut out the carbs and keep the protein intake..........that means you can still eat the treats....not that I am one to take advice from, I have put 2 stone on lol..........but I could afford to put some on
Exercise is addictive because the workout releases endorphins to the brain (the feel good chemicals) so the more you work the better you feel. The way I look at it, I can eat and drink what I want but I must ensure that I live a busy energetic life. I used to be a builder so could do just that but now I'm getting a little podgy I am thinking about starting to ride 15-20 every weekend again, or running etc. You have to raise your heartbeat and keep it elevated for a sustained period. The key to being healthy and fit? Eat what you want, in moderation and exercise. Simples.
What you're doing sounds pretty good - I'd stick with it. Any good stuff you do now'll serve you well for the future. Re the mid-life thing - I think you do def go through phases in life, but it's a good thing . PS If you start feeling the need to buy tight Lycra shorts, I'd ease off a bit...
Ricky in a not mid life but just before mid life crisis ive binned the fags and taken to running. Ive even entered a half marathon with the hope i can eventually get to run the london marathon. What ive found is im happier, i have more get up and go, my posture seems to have changed and!!!!!!!!! i can get in into my graduation tuxedo for springcamp 15 years after I graduated!! (get in!!).. Its hard to get motivated but once you do you get addicted and then you feed off the endorphins. I now look forward to my run for the buzz it gives! ;D
cool well done mate, out of interest does anyone understand good/bad food (obviously i know loads of kebabs is bad etc) what i mean is carbs and proteins, i have no idea what carbs are good and what they "do" in your body and what protein does etc....i want to understand food a bit more, basically at the moment i'm eating ceral in a morning fruit and ryvetas etc while at work but processed any old crap for my "main meal" at tea time at home.
Balanced diet is the keyband thats where a kebab comes in! It has meat (kindof) salad (sommert to do wiv 5 a day) and bread (carbs n tasty) so in summary kebabs are healthy n good for you!)
Ricky that's just about what the docs told me I need a bit more exercise. Brisk walk for 10 mins a day. He didn't recommend the gym, he did seem to think much of them. Nothing you can't get from walking or riding your bike. And it's free to do.
Exercise? Cons? There aren't any. Regular exercise, like walking and riding throughout the day, is good enough. A person sitting still in a chair for 40 odd hours every week and going to the the gym twice a week will be less fit than someone regularly walking throughout the day and not going to the gym at all. It's true. It's also true that a frantic daily spurt of exercise for just 60 seconds is better than 2 or 3 hours at the gym. If you want to bulk up some muscle then the gym's the best place to be. If you just want to get fit then they're a waste of time and money.
When i had my dog at home adn was walking twice a day i felt so much better also. I gave up drinking and cut down on cigs last year. Lats time i got drunk was errrrrrrrrrrrrr March last year. How sad is that. Just keep a few cides for shows now adn make sure i paparazzi all the drunk people at shows. Well done keep it up if your feeling great
I decided to get myself fit when I turned 40, I'm now 43, and I'm fitter and healthier than I was when I was 25, my reasons for doing it, well we have a history of heart disease and cancer on both sides of my family, so it makes sense to try and keep my heart and body healthy, by the way the only excercise I do is running and walking (usually a 10k running) and sometimes up to 15 miles when I'm out walking, and of course there's the vanity thing, I just don't want to be a fat git, simples, don't get caught up in what other people say is the best, your obviously felling fitter and healthier so just keep doing what your doing, I eat a reasonably healthy diet, I do believe in the "5 a-day" theory, but I also like going down the boozers for a good swally, I just do what I think is right for me, but regular excercise is good for you, it's been proven !!!!!!!!!!!!
At what point do these endorphins kick in then? I used to run regularly for at least 20 mins every morning sometimes reaching the giddy heights of 30 mins at an average of 6mph. All I got was sweaty. Nowadays I try to move about more during the day and get my high from a swift pint or two.
