Engine woes for new owner - haven't even received my V5 yet :(

  1. Piston scoring aint good. What's the state of cylinder bores? Hope its not gonna be too bad. Might as well do it totally right now rather than a bit and another bit later. More smiles per mile.
Could save on the extras if you give the right foot a diet in the future:) although I appreciate the belt and braces approach.
My philosphy with VWs is if it breaks fix it better than stock if poss

  2. Yes I've just dug out the receipt for the pistons and barrels which are a £131.99 set from justaircooled so have been advised it maybe worth an upgrade at this stage to some Mahle or similar. If it possibly needs to be done at this stage I'd rather do it then I have pice of mind. I think the cooler I'm going to leave but I think I want the full flow filter.
I'm sticking in some gauges to just to be able to monitor things, I may not keep them in, and I ow I have them on my work van and car and never look but you know what it's like! Well, seeing as I've driven it twice and broken down both times I'm going to be on the edge of my seat driving for a while anyway!

  3. It's in, it's running, all in 6 hours including requiring the engine bay pretty much, new fuel lines, mount oil filter etc :)

  4. Congrats. You've done it up right. Will have no problems from now on with that. On to something else to play with on the Van. LOL

  5. Had mine rebuilt recently, 300 miles down, apart from adjusting the points all has been good.

Just make sure all your fuel lines are plumbed in correctly, get a engine bay auto fire extinguisher.

    Have fun now :)

  6. Nice one. Time to get some miles under your belt.

  7. ok so i got some miles under my belt, approx 6 until problems.

did ok yesterrday, but did about 3 today, when to shop, ok, on way back from shop some guy flashing and beeping behind, i pull in, just as i do the oil pressure gauge drops and oil light comes on, feck, switch off engine.

he said that he say oil coming out the back, on closer inspection the 2 hoses that feed the oil filer had split on the jubilee clips.

cut out the split, refit and fire up, idles ok, gauge at 2 bar, but as soon as i go to pull away i may get 5 meters and the guage drops right off and the oil light comes on. the level is reading just below the second line, so not enought oil by just a bit, but is that causing these problems, or is it something else? van stuck prob 1/2 a mile from home, needs recovery tomorrow.

not feeling great at this point.

  8. Sounds like you need more oil in to fill the pipework and the filter back up maybe

  9. Spitting your oil out isn't good, but I'm sure you'll fix it

I should point out that if God had intended you to have an oil filter, He would have fitted one in the 1970s...;)

Some of the smaller filters, like say a T4 filter, are too small I've found and mine for one spits them out (it did once anyway).
When the oils cold it's thicker of course and that's when a split (though the pipe shouldn't have split) will occur.
To get the oil level right, you need to run the engine for a few seconds, wait a few seconds then try the level. That should take account of the oil that drains back from the filter and pipes. My full level is and 1/2" above the full on the dip-stick if left overnight.

  11. i checked the level just after turning the engine off so wouldd have circuilated i would have thought, so below the low line is going to cause issues with pressure then and cause the light to come on?

Try filling it up and you'll answer that for sure, but yes I'd say, short of oil. It'll run back to the sump much faster when it's hot and thin and as you're so short it'll be hot. If you left it to cool right down, did the run for a few seconds and dip test, I bet it would be even lower. The low mark isn't a low mark, it's a half full mark, so you have lost more than half the "standard" oil + whatever runs back from the filter pipes.

When it's getting so low it can barely pick up (the oil must cover the pick-up entrance), it might be fine at tickover, but when you increase the revs it gets churned up and chucked about inside by whirling bits. Been there and done that. First of all you see pressure drop at high revs, then as you loose more oil, the revs it looses pressure at get lower and lower until you're crawling along in 4th. Hope that explains it.

  14. ok, much in the way of damage, i can hear no knocks, and hardly moved from where i was, hope i havent fecked my new engine, i will actually cry

You haven't been driving about with the oil light on? Should be fine then. :)

I had a call-out the other day - a company that rents a camper out for corporate photo shoot thingies. They'd come from Oxford to Cambridge and the top pulley shattered/fan belt broke 20 miles short of cambridge. Being a "driver" he carried on to get to his digs and made it. He said there was a lot of smoke, but assumed it must be bits of the fan beltAlso drove to the first 2 locations the next morning. I replaced the broken bits and it still ran even though the HT lead caps had melted so much we couldn't get them out, it sounded rough though! I think that's how to knacker your engine. ;)

  16. Wow sounds gruesome, what a muppets for carrying on!
I have some better hose from a hydrylic hose supplier to replace the oil lines with, the pipe fitted was only temp but I though it would last more than 6 miles!
Hopefully oil top up and on my way tomorrow then, I hear no knocks or bangs, will have my fingers crossed!
    Thanks for your help zed
How far would you need to go with the oil light on to knacker it?

  17. That'll have stretched valves stems and have loose seats now  Proper feked!!

chrisselby Get another litre and a half of oil in your engine and you should be fine

btw oil lines shouldn't have jubilee clips... you need to get some proper oil lines made up!! :)

How long is a piece of string... Are you saying you drove 3 miles? That's quite a long way though I won't call you a muppet. ;)You do need high pressure hose, mine has over 80lbs pressure (off the scale) when it's cold.
