Engine will not start after rebuild - suspect electrickery.

  1. Bummer. I can do next weekend, I have a complete spare FI set up in a box I can bring, harness, double relay no AFM thou. If it al went back right it's going to be something daft.

  2. certainly sounds like a power issue to the fuel pump like you say Ricky. yes when the starter is activated it should power the fuel pump,

A way of checking it(although i know you already have proved the pump) is to have ignition on and turn the air flow meter spindle under the black cover of the AFM. You can also check that there is 12 volts on the Red with Blue trace wire (12v feed to pump out of the double relay) if you are getting 12 volts then you have a woiring issue if you dont then i would say it is a dual relay issue, it is unlikely that something has just broken while it has been sat there more likely a loose/bad connection

I have a spare fuel pump wiring loom and also a dual relay if you want to borrow it.

To any volunteers - it's not like we've tried much, just agreed it was getting too cold and late to carry on after half an hour of wiggling wires and proving the pump wasn't getting volts.

  6. LOL well i dunno i am in work all week. there is loads of stuff you can test with a multimeter and it will narrow it down. its either the dual relay or the wire that feeds the pump.

    did you take any pictures?

on what? no fuse that i know of mate.

  10. Don't worry about you wanting to crack on Mr Roo. We like pictures. Especially when things are broke. The more broke the better:D

Hope you get sorted asap

  11. Sorry i meant of trhe dual relay and wiring etc but you didnt anyway so it doesnt matter.

Have you checked all the fuses in the box? Just a thing I have picked up over the years when having issue's with anything electric. Not clued up on f1 engine at all soz.

We'd have spotted a broken/fallen off bit.

the only slightly worrying thing i guess is the fact we routed the big thick f.i loom "neater" under the air intake/mixture tubes rather than them flopping around, i was wondering if we'd fractured an old wire or summat, just out of interest then does the relay power anything else that would stop it going - regardless of the pump not running? for example "if" we powered the pump direct just to start it would it go - or would the injectors not open or would it overfuel etc?

Look at the VW mechanics one, it's yellow and white, (on my phone so can't see it easily here), it is a simple step by step check through the FI System, it is what the VW mechanics used, it is simply the dogs danglies.

You don't need to know about the ins and outs, just do what it says and follow the steps through. It's solved many an FI problem for me.

Good luck, happy to help remotely if you need photos etc. Get started on that manual and post the results as you go, I'll see if I can help.

  16. not really up on the FI on these,
but this weekend i was working on my 1973 dodge
and i re-routed a couple of cables and one of them snapped like a twig...

  17. Dual relay supplies current from the battery to the control unit and the injectors whenever the ignition is turned on.

Whenever the starter is engaged the relay activates the fuel pump and supplies current to the cold start system.

After the engine is started contacts in the intake air sensor control the relay so the fuel pump will run constantly during normal engine operation.

All of the above is from the AFC fuel injection trouble shooting manual.

Apparently you and Ed are going to fix the poo bus during the week, just to annoy us. :D

We could have done with one of those, but weren't expecting any trouble TBH. :)

  20. Did you plug the feed wire from the coil to the double relay back on?
