Avoid the engine shop at all costs... I had a recon bottom end off them, rebuilt top end myself up to 1641 ... it went down after 60 miles! Stripped it down & sent it back for further recon... came back with leaking flywheel oil seal & threaded gland nut so couldn’t get it back in.... sent it back again, came back ‘fixed’ but then it seized solid after only 2000 miles & out of warranty, so ended up a lump of scrap..... I have nothing good to say about them even their initial paperwork talks about defending court action if there’s a problem.... proper shysters!
I’ve got a 1776cc that came from The Engine Shop back in 2009. No idea of the internal spec as I’m sure since then they have tweaked things (for better or worse) and the website description probably wouldn’t match mine now. It runs okay on the single solex ( slightly enlarged main jet keeps it cooler) but I’ve nothing to compare it to, power-wise. And I’ve not got anything in the way of external oil cooling. I probably still don’t go much over 60, but at least it copes with that relatively easily, and on a long run will turn in close to 25mpg.
I'm not to bothered about speed as it's for leasure only so 60mph i don't mind. I just want to get up hills, last year in Wales we were following sat nav the road got narrower and narrower steeper and steeper until the bus just refused to go forwards i don't know what the incline was but i ended up in 1st gear standing still with the back wheels jumping up & down on the spot. My wife had to then go to the queue of cars behind us and as them all to reverse So if i can get away with a 1641cc I'd be happy. I tink I'll go on Google maps street view and see what ratio the incline was. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
If you can get a reputable build, in a camper I would get the extra oomph from a 1776, my 1800 Type 4 in a Westy is fine, again like others I would describe it as leisurely, but again I rarely rag it as it seems happiest at 60. A camping interior really does make these things heavy as....
Ok i there's no sign at the bottom of the hill but there is @ the top. So is this considered steep? We were trying to avoid a 6% hill but I'm confused now whats steeper Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
33! that would hurt on a bike..That's steep!... 6% would have been a bit easier.. Sent from my SM-T580 using Tapatalk
Blimey, I think most vans, no matter the engine size, would struggle with that. We've got a 25% hill round here and that's bad enough in the camper!
You lost traction, and an engine with more torque would still spin the wheels. Was this on a tight hairpin bend?
Funny enough I'd just come around the bend but was in 1st gear all the way around. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
That's 1 in 3 - much the same as Hardnott Pass in Cumbria . Parbold Hill is 1 in 6 I think - so twice as steep!
Saved me looking. I could get from the end of the 30mph limit to 60mph by the top. I don't think that sort of behaviour has done my engine any favours though so no more of that when I've fixed it.
I've not tried Parbold hill but i have done Roby Mill by the star pub thats steep but i duno how much. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
