Engine foam seal

  1. Silly question but always wonder which is the right way to put in the foam engine seal round the tin is it foam side up rubberised side down or the other way round ?

  2. Also is there a knack to getting it seated behind the fan housing without catching it and tearing it or your hands on the cooling vent mechanism

Type 1 is foam up, rubber down.
Some people advocate getting it seated to one side of the fan housing and pushing it round until you can reach it. I found this easy enough but it is still better to be able to get under it and tidy the inevitable bits that haven’t quite spread evenly.

EggBoxes, nicktuft and snotty like this.
  4. Shiney side down. Start with the joint/end at the rear of the tinware, round up and over the fan housing, then down the other side. You'll have to grovel under the van to pull it through behind the engine.

  5. Thanks guys

  6. Green side up, if you're laying turf

If I take the oil cleaner out , I can reach the end round the front of the fan housing while it is still being pushed in from just to the left of the doghouse.

Then pull a bit, push a bit and so on. I never have to go under the bus, as once you have a decent pull from the right, you can feed it properly so it is engaged in the slot on the left and pull it out on the right in alternation.
I leave the join in mine just behind the battery , mainly because the cable duct for the fog lamp and towbar goes through the gap.

I did my type easily enough from the engine bay( got it the wrong way up first time though!

  9. Can you go back and redo that turf you laid?
