Following on from the camper not starting.... it seems to have shat oil on the floor having got it started the other day - appears to be dripping from many places. It’s always dripped( surprise) but this is new... Doing the old end float test reveals several feet of movement - well, I can see it moving - got to be a mm or two. I’ve had old motors that have run well with a good amount of movement but clearly this is not going to be solved with a few shims. It was a cheap motor off a member here and it’s been in the van 7 years so I’ve had my money’s worth. anyway - I’m off to have my haircut....
That is too much, and means the crankcase has taken a beating and needs machining. Can't really shim it out. Engine may run quite happily for many miles, but peeing oil from the flywheel end indicates the seal has gone (possibly due to the excessive endfloat).
I’ll take a closer look once the starting issue is resolved- it looks like the oil was dripping off the strainer plate - and many other places rather than the bell housing but I’ll get it running and see if it is wazzing out. If not pouring out when running I’ll live with it as we’ve only got local trips lined up this year and take a view after the summer. I just remembered I have a spare engine that I could run as a temp one if this one spills it’s guts.
Would this bad boy give me an accurate enough measurement? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Indicator-...ocphy=9045623&hvtargid=pla-419506747622&psc=1
I may set up a GoFundMe page to raise the dollars for a 2110cc. Some old sob story and boooosh new motor time.
I'd say there's little point in measuring it if it's in the order of a couple of mm. The case is worn, and the bearing behind the flywheel is moving. No real way of shimming it out.
how can one know what level of play there is without measuring it , instead of guessing, end float feels lots more than it is
From memory, the spec is fractional mm (can't remember exactly). Effectively, you can't feel it. If you can, likely the bearing's likely moving in the case.
like @zedders said, you can feel and hear it , particularly when an engines been sat as the oils fell out, knowing is better than guessing
