Okay I'm stationary now. I can take it so long as it's constructive. Obviously I am reaching out to you guys for guidance as I have already said it is something I struggle with. Where I take exception is when people who can't or won't show fallibility in their own efforts chip in with cheap shots. It is very hard to post stuff up that leaves you open for ridicule. But I am confident it is moving on ( my ability) and know I will crack on regardless of the type of response this thread gets ( it has been good thus far btw) as I know there will be others watching this thread and not saying a thing, but learning from us all.
I have absolutely nothing to lose from posting my efforts in this thread , but like those watching in the wings, loads to gain.

I have learned something tonight. I have 8mm wire and tip. I should change to 6mm asap. I left the 8mm in as it came with it. Cheers.

  2. 0.6 is better for bodywork in a smaller welder...

Also if the old/current wire has rust spots on it will give you a irregular wire speed, as the rust catches on the lead liner and welding tip

Should of come to techenders I could have showed you a bit ;) . I would say try not to weld runs, it's pretty hard on rusty stuff and particularly when you're learning, as @zed said above do spots one joined to the previous one, this helps in a few ways
    1 reduces heat a lot
    2 reduces distortion
3 it builds up a thick bit to weld onto and absorb some of the heat

By absorbing the heat your less likely to blow holes and you can probably get a better feel for it.

    Got any current welding pictures?
Have you practiced on a spare bit of metal ?

I think I can get you part way there over the phone :)

Cheers for the replies everyone. I have read them all and grateful for the input.

Paul. The tip is the one that came with the welder. The wire is a new 5kg job I got at Halfords as it was all my local store had last week.

Dave. I got a new mask yesterday and what a difference. If I could load a picture of what I did yesterday since getting it you could see the improvement. I will get the computer back soon and post them up.

Mick. I think welding a metro would make or break a new welder. Lol

  7. He is only welding, not landing a passenger plane..:gnome:

Yesterday ( still no pics soz) I remade the B n C posts. Remade the other support posts and made my own outer sills then fit them. I made a bottom door skin and tacked it on and I am really pleased with the job. Welder at 45 degree helps flatten the weld, I also did shorter runs and joined then rather than one long run.

I will upload pics when I can. I Am going to be tackling the bent door post today!

I have read the great pointers posted in this thread and watched lots of video on welding, but there still comes a point when you have to do it yourself which is when it becomes different to looking at pictures of other people's experienced welding or watching videos of obviously experienced welders plying their own particular skills. My approach now is to get on with it, learn as I go,pay attention to the bits that are inaccessible later ( get those as good as I can now) and go back over the poor bits as I get more confident. It seems the logical approach for me, other than going back to paying someone. And what better chance to learn than doing a rusty old doka?

I had to take these with the kindle, so as I could upload them poor pics sorry..

I made the outer sills and the bottom cargo door panel. I cut straightened welded and ground the bent door post this morning. A bit off filler should see it good. I have tacked the door panel on for now, I will take it off and finish it tomorrow'

  13. Even though the pics arent very good i will say you are getting better:)
I can see the new mask is helping as your welds are getting straighter
And i can see you have taken the advice of doing about an inch at a time
Which is helping as theres one section of weld near the door hinge that looks quite decent:thumbsup:

When your butt welding panels are you leaving a slight gap between the two panels malc?

Keep at it dude by the time the dokas done youll be able to do it with your eyes shut

  18. Best tip I had for weld ing learning was sit next to your welder with piece of metal, setv your amps, then start welding with one hand while other hand alters wire speed, go round the dial if you want , see what a difference it can make, then youll find the speed sweet spot!
