Earlier fuel sender compatible with late fuel gauge?

  1. Hi,

Does anyone know if the earlier fuel sender is compatible with the later fuel gauge?

I'd like to fit one of these: http://www.veewee.co.uk/index.php/parts/fuel-system/fuel-sender-units-gauges/919vg0120?vehicle=VW-Camper+68+-79

    Reason why:

I ordered the SAE J30 R9 fuel pipe kit from Machine7 to replace the old fuel lines on my late devon bay 1977, however i couldn't get the pipe to seal around the fuel pipe elbow coming out of the tank. On close inspection it looks very pitted and i suspect a micro fracture.

I've pulled the engine out (first time! really quite simple) and tank which has given me the opportunity to clean, wire brush and waxoyl.

I've got and earlier tank which has the replaceable elbow on the bottom but smaller aperture for the sender. (not the twist in one but the bolt in cylindrical float one)

I'd like to use the earlier tank as it has the replaceable elbow, baffles and internal gauze filter. It's the saml size just needs a good clean.

I'm also going to attempt the POR15 treatment: http://www.frost.co.uk/por15-basic-car-tank-repair-kit.html

Anyone had any experience with POR15 and have a good technique?

Any help & advice gratefully received!

No the gauge will bounce around all the time

The early gauge works on 0-100 hms late on 10-7o, it would burn your vibrator and maybe your gauge as it would send it over the top. Bouncing is the other way late sender early gauge. Your best bet would be to fit a set of early gauges they go in with very little mod, You just have to extend the indicator light to take care of the two in the early pod and pick up the dip light from the lighting relay.
