If you lived closer to here we could probably squeeze it into my garage for the winter. Bit of a treck from that there ooooop North though!

  4. better than yours...:p

you will get more money for it with a full mot (more than 3-400),it makes economic sence...:hattip:

  5. Everything looks better than mine. :(

  6. See my pickup lately?:D

  7. Take it for MOT test. Look at the fails and then assess the cost of repairs. Repairs will be garage rates as you would not be doing the work I presume.

In your situation there are too many unknowns with the car. One thing is known, you don't have any spare money!!

So all this stuff about repairing it and doing a resto is pie in the sky for you.

Looking on ebay there are projects for sale and some rough cars with mot and the mot'd ones dont fetch a lot more.

If it was my car, I would sell it as is and use the money more usefully.

  8. I was in the same position with my Bug, its actually a tricky place to fix as it's part crossmember, part inner wing, part heater channel, part floorpan. So as said the correct way is body off, thats not what I did though, i cut out each piece and made up replacement pieces and welded them in. Strong but not very pretty, mines a daily driver too so I just want to get it back on the road. Check the same place on the other side In my experience the rust is always mirrored even if its not so bad. If you're not going to fix it up now, I'd sell it I'm terrible at holding onto things and still have my first car/beetle I fully intended on restoring it but never found the time now it just supplies the odd spare part as it just rusted away.:( Mine will be back on the road next week, but then again I don't have to do a test (for now).

  9. I say keep it and get the work done - if they will agree to do the work needed for an mot pass for that price
£300-400 will not buy you much in terms of another car to use!
If you plan to get him fully restored at some point then get saving or find somewhere to store him until you can afford it

If you don't get the work done now, find somewhere to keep the bug until you can afford a full resto

Nothing wrong with sentimentality as long as you spend your cash with your eyes wide open

I spent a stupid amount of cash restoring my van 13 years ago for sentimental reasons (i'm sure i could have bought a mint hardly used one for much less cash).

I decided to keep the van for life so if I split the cost over loads of years it works out as f all

I didn't spend £40k on a full resto, but even if I had it's only 2k a year over 20 years! I'm not that far off 20 years ownership already

    Keep it!

  10. If you've got a place to work on it, I've a spare welder going free over on VZI...

  11. This is what i chopped out of mine to get to solid metal again. It was only a 50p sized hole before i hit it with an angle grinder with cup brush.

It should really have been scrapped years ago but its my first VW so is staying.

  12. Zebedee's pic and comments say it all. That could be your car.

Forget the sentiment. You have a rot car that you cant afford to restore. It is about the money. Do you have £400 to spend on it now in the hope of passing the mot.

You are not a restorer. You dont have anywhere to store it and you dont have the money to pay storage costs. Will you have the money in the years ahead to keep throwing at it.

Some folks enjoy restoring their vehicles over many years as part of the hobby, but remember while being stored/restored you are not driving it and enjoying it.

In storage the car will get much worse.

Take the sensible decision, get rid of it and move on.

Are you in motivational speaking by any chance?

Ignore the nay sayers @Ermintrude; you can make it happen somehow...

  14. Im thinking... get whatever it needs done cheaply to get it through its test. That way it stays alive and your soul isn't tormented by selling it to someone who doesn't feel the bug lurve. I kept mine going for a good 8 or 9 years just doing that and it all went horribly wrong when I took it for a resto and the company folded leaving my bug in bits. That was its demise. If you do decide to go down the "only running 1 classic route" ie being sensible (but where's the fun in that), let me know. I can give it a good home and keep it alive as a family car!

Have you considered buying Billy a welder for Christmas?

It'd probably end up a VolksWorld cover car by 2027...

  16. As expected, lots of great comments pros and cons on here.

We are trying to help Ermintrude make up his mind about the bug.

As my last post on this subject I would give an example of my son (T25 owner) who has a Mk2 Golf which needs lots of work. It was his pride and joy but has seen better days.

No MOT and work for the MOT would likely be several hundred pounds. My son thought about the options and took a decision to keep the Golf in his large garage and leave it there until there is time and money to restore it. It is still in the garage looking sad . Hopefully one day it will be back on the road again.

So Ermintrude, we have given you lots of ideas and options but its your car and your money, so please make your decision and let us know.

Maybe what you don't know is Erm's has been keeping this one going for many a year and is quite attached to it. When I say quite...

...and now you do know Erm is female, you'll appreciate that whatever advice you give "IT'LL BE WRONG"!! :D

@Ermintrude , if it's any consolation Mrs Monkeys' Marge was holed in the same spot. You know how much she loves that bug but we had it patched up for the MOT & Mel drives her every day! I nearly died when I saw the hole but our welder wasn't phased, just did it for a bout 90 quid & away we went. Maybe the floorpan will have to be cut off in the future, we'll worry about that then...x
