Driving lights on the back. How is your hindsight?

  1. So now we have new neighbors across the street. The once charming brick 3 bed room ranch now looks like a daycare center/petting zoo. Procreation seemingly their #1 priority, wave after eternal wave of small children and dogs now litter the street, leaving behind them a wake of toys and other debris.
As you know, Westfalias are difficult enough to back up without having to worry about damaging your tires (tyres) on toys and toddlers, so I had to improve my night vision while backing out.
If you've ever considered adding back-up lights but weren't sure if you would like the look of them, this is your chance to see a pair installed.
I chose from the Burners brand platinum series. These chrome lights have the classic vintage look with modern halogen power that slices through the dark like a Ginsu knife. Their traditional rounded shape juxtaposes politely against the fine curved lines of an old VW.
I turned onto a dark desolate country road recently. My rear view mirrors showed nothing but blackness. After about 1 kilometer I switched on my new lights and they illuminated the lines on the road all the way back to the stop sign where I turned on, which was a clear red dot in my mirror. I then switched them back off with an exquisite sense of smug satisfaction.
Theses lights also have swivel bases, so they can be directed to light up a camping area in case you arrive late and find yourself setting up in the dark.
In sum, I just love these lil buggers.

Luckily, they came with the same type of switch as my front lights from The Bus Depot. Both switches installed easily through my air conditioner duct.

Installation Tip- Tempting though it may be to wire these into your cigarette lighter's power supply, don't. It can't take it. You will have to wire them to the battery, so buy an extra roll of wire and a pack of splicers.

I like it. I didn't want to drill holes in my roof so I fitted a fog light on my engine lid. Handy for erecting stuff at campsites in the dark too.

Very interested to see you got aircon, mine did have but its been taken out, I'd like to refit it. I have the pump & the dash bit but nothing else, where else on the bus are the bits for it fitted? ;)

Just noticed Birdy's marker lights on the doors light up amber, i thought these were reflectors only? mine are....i feel a mod coming on - maybe to indicators? maybe markerlights? i like lights.

Thanks Birdy, i'm liking the idea think i'll do it too, i don't belive the law would mind? i'm sure N.A.Skeet will tell us.......

  10. According to U.S. traffic laws, ours are supposed to light up. Notice all American cars either have a functioning side directional light or the front directional wraps around the corner to be seen from front and side.
I keep waiting for the day I get pulled over and have to explain to the cop that it's a just reflector. It will probably be the one day that I've had a beer or two and I'll wind up in jail.

how long has that law been in place? i would imagine if supposed to light up and or wrap round this must be a fairly "new" law as no u.s vw's i have seen have light up front lights or wrap around ones? as i say mine is from california and it's just reflectors although i have kept the amber running lights in the turn signal.

  12. Interesting. I may just call the police and ask them.

The reasons why the door reflectors don't illuminate is because there is a 5w lamp within the front indicator unit that can be seen from the side. That said they still look silly as reflectors.

  14. I've often wondered how visible those are from the side. I never knew they had an extra little bulb dedicated to the side view! Thank you. That was interesting.
On a side note, I should go make sure mine are not burned out. I've obviously never checked them! :)

  15. I got these in my van why are there 3 bulbs (one is a twin filament) I moved my side lights to the headlight.
    :)
