  1. Nice and shiny now, satisfying indeed

  2. I'd just leave them on the coffee table as a conversation piece.

  3. Could make them into ear rings

  4. The spacers, not the shafts that is.

  5. This is the drive shaft, which fell off on Christmas Eve , and therefore this needs doing now (rather than ‘extend and pretend’ ..by tightening the nuts regularly).

I need to get a boot off, and put the new one on.

But there’s a splined bit, like the head of a mace stopping it sliding off. How do I get this off?? 7F95567A-BFAD-44E2-B6F5-D22FB588EFF9.jpeg 7F95567A-BFAD-44E2-B6F5-D22FB588EFF9.jpeg 029716FF-B7BA-4232-BFD2-50CFDE39F69B.jpeg

Isn't that part the joint trying to escape?

  7. Here it is cleaned a bit more. It won’t just slide off? 32552C70-5729-4E1A-A9D3-F3BBF1F4F06F.jpeg

  8. Clean the grease off and remove the circlip/snap ring holding it on.

That ‘mace’ is the inner part of the CV joint, slide that off the spline, remove the snap ring first of course. Then you’ll need to wash your balls and regrease them.:)

  10. Once the circlip is off you will find the joint is a tight fit on the shaft splines. The easiest and correct way to remove it is on a press.
If you can’t get it on a press, heat the shaft with a hot air gun & carefully tap the joint on the solid bit, not near where the ball bearings go or you will damage it.
Once off don’t tilt the joint too far or your balls will pop out  and they are a nightmare to get back in the their original position.

  11. I've just done 6 , they came off easily enough . Just pop off the circlip and find out if it's your lucky day. I've never had to press any off , just a light tap from the boot side on the inner does the trick...

I’ve never used a press and never used any heat – a copper faced mallet has always worked but don’t force it, if at first you don’t succeed use a bigger hammer.

Hopefully nobody will say spray it with WD40.

  15. Top tip: never use jam to lubricate the CV joints.

  16. Why is cv joint grease made to get everywhere? I did a boot change a few weeks ago & tried my best to keep it to the joint and gloves
Somehow although wearing overalls I still managed to get some on the ass of my jeans which then transferred to a dining room chair cover
    Hazmat suit next time.

  18. Today is not the day to stop smoking fags (again). That circlip took about a frustrating hour!. But now it’s all done! Except for putting it back on and driving

  19. Did you thoroughly grease your balls? New washers?

  20. Yes. I find the best way is to swear a lot, ping the clip across the garage a few times, get at least seven different tools out, shout a lot and then forget how you finally got it on so that you have the same situation next time.
