Door restoration

  1. Hi,
Apart from what you can see in the photo, the door is sound. Would anybody recommend anything in addition to flooding the innards with waxoyl? Is filler worth doing?
    Thanks[IMG]

  2. From your photo, it looks like it would probably need welding. Make sure the drain holes are clear.

  3. Where are the drain holes supposed to be?

Lower part of the door towards the front.

  6. Thanks Jim. Most of the door bottom on both sides on my bus have been replaced and I couldn't see any reference points because they were so rusty.

Thought there may have been an additional drainage hole through the side impact pressing and the framefor the reason @Skater 8 mentions but will stick with the original design and park downhill!

  7. Is that a complete new door skin? Or is there some other way of doing it? Had a look in JK and Schofield's, and can't see any sections.

Complete new door skin. You could make up some repairs if it’s not too bad but taking off the whole skin let’s you clean up 50 years worth of dirt and rust. Schofields also sell the curved part of the channel.

The bottom of the doors was designed the way it was precisely so a drain hole could be made OUTSIDE the door seal at the lowest point. There is nowhere else you can make one outside the seal.

  11. If it’s really bad you could try to find a used door. I don’t know how easy that is in the UK.

It used to be really easy, we'd buy imported from USA, but then they decided late bays were worth keeping after all and the prices have shot up/supplies dried up Before that is was Australia - same thing happened. The doors on my van were genuine rust free deluxe fully built up, £80 each. You'd have to be a proper skin flint to repair a bad one, it didn't make much sense. Can't have been all that long ago, I'd guess 10 years ago. Now I think it's more like £400 for a stripped down one with dents and some rust. Something of that order.

It was £295 for a new door 10 years ago from JK...

And that was a German smooth not Brazilian swaged one.

I am guessing the new new ones on their way from Belgium are going to cost an astronomical amount if their front panel pressing is £750...
