Distributor position?? HELP

    Don't quote me but someone may be able to confirm .but isn't 7.5 degree BTDC 13MM To the right of TDC mark when looking from rear of the van . ?

    There isn't a TDC mark on many pulleys and if there is, it's a wide dimple on the wrong part of the pulley. The mark is the timing mark.

    But if you did go to the trouble of accurately finding TDC then 7.5 degs would be

    pi x pulley diameter/360 x 7.5.

    Not all pulleys are the same dia.

    How would I “mash out the insides of a spark plug”?
    Silly question but does it matter what cylinder you do this method of finding TDC?
     
  4. You're trying to find TDC on cylinder no 1, which is the only one of interest.

  5. 1 and 3 should put a mark at the same place 3 and 2 180° round from there

  6. 1 or 3, it doesn't matter, but 3 is slightly easier access.

  7. Hi Mike thanks again for your post and then confirmation of which cylinder still not sure what you mean when you say mash out the insides of a spark plug? It would be good to do the exercise you describe to enable me to check the markings on my pulley and then know for certain where mt TDC is.

  8. It was quite a long time ago and I can't remember the details. But it was straightforward as the insides are mostly ceramic

  9. Perfect thanks Mike that’ll do for me

    now that that engine is running my next “project” is another engine (photo) and it’s going to be a challenge to say the least for someone like me but I’m really enjoying myself working on theses engines and am hoping everything I’m learning will stand me in good stead when I finally get to Europe for my three month trip so I can carry the basics and keep Kaz going should anything breakdown

  14. I was given the opportunity to save it from being scrapped and wanted to take the opportunity to build my experience of working with air cooled engines

Well this is going to test my “ability” lol it was tight to turn over so I put a little oil in the plug holes and worked it a little it gave a crack and seemed quite free BUT when I took the rocker cover off the push rod on number 4 cylinder wasn’t engaged with the rocker and was lying down below the rocker all the rest of the valves are moving freely

    On the rocker for that valve the spring was full of crude which I’ve no degreased and cleaned so

    My questions are:

    can I just relocate the push rod to the rocker and go for a compression test or

    is this a rebuild ?

    Roll it on a flat surface.. if it rolls its Ok if it stops its bent..

    Its worth looking at the clips and wavy washers on the corresponding rocker arm, they do give up then the rocker goes sideways and the pushrod can pop out.

    Also check the valve is moving with the replaced pushrod when you turn the engine over by hand , in case the valve is stuck.

    Also check the stems of all the valves are level when there is no pressure on them from the pushrods...
    In case the valve seat is loose or the valve seat is receded or the stem is stretched or the valve is distorted with heat.

    The black crud is probably the effect of a leaky valve guide, cooking the oil in the cylinder head with exhaust gas. Which possibly then jammed the valve down..
