Devon poptop vent

  1. What does the popup vent in the Devon poptop roof panel do? Is it to remove heat or condensation?

I am tempted to remove it, and make a blank panel out of alloy sheet. The reason for this is that my bay will fit in my garage with it removed, it leaks through the lid as it is cracked and the bolt holes also leak. I realise I can replace the cover, but just weighing up my options. I will make any mods reversible so it can be re-fitted.

We are likely to use the camper for short camping trips and as a day van at weekends, there are no top bunks fitted.

  2. I find it helps to make the bus comfortable on hot days.

  3. Roof vents let out condensation and stop you steaming up.

I would keep some kind of roof vent.

I 'lowered' the fiamma roof vent on my Devon, so it would fit in my old garage.

Could you dig some channels for the wheels in the garage floor?

  4. Thanks for that, I have a spare set of wheels, so could put silly low tyres on them if need be, also may change the garage door to Barn doors.
As for the vent, yes good point. I see your profile pic has the roof on it, and it looks smart. Have you got any photos on the forum of what you did?
    Cheers....

  5. I had to remove the up and over door, on our garage to get the bus in.
    Fitted 'Barn Doors' instead.
The only problem I have now is the slope on the garage roof is an inch and a half too low to let the bus go in with the roof rack fitted.

  6. I bought some strong hinges and countersunk machine screws and converted my up and over door to a side hinging door. It didn't take long to get the door off, drill a few holes and bolt the new hinges on and only cost a few quid. I had it like that for several years until we rebuilt the garage with barn doors.

  7. Weirdly, I am just looking up Side hinge garage doors on the internet, to see if that would help. My other car is a Defender 110 and I can only just get that in too.

    Thank you for the comment

  9. Sorry, No photos of the lowered vent.

It was a fiamma vent, plastic 'top' chopped off and metal plate riveted on with less height.

I wouldn't recommend it as the way to go

  10. Yes, too many toys. The defender is nearly finished, it was my last project, really chuffed with it. I'll put some photos up in the proper bit of the forum.
