SORTED Desperate for a U.S spec exhaust for my 2.0L type 4 motor

Discussion in 'Late Bay Parts Classifieds' started by brianjbox, Aug 31, 2024.

  1. USA had type 4 much earlier than the uk - these are 1700 type 4 fitment - should fit fine on a 2.0 but as @davidoft says you will also need the different risers /elbows (jk sells them). Genuine h/ex will give you more heat than repros - however as you can see these will need some sealing up/repair. Repro jk etc sells a full kit but its 700 quid: https://www.justkampers.com/heat-exchanger-kit-vw-t2-bay-1972-1978-1700-1800-2000cc-air-cooled.html plus you'd still need to buy an exhaust to fit to it.. overall looking at somewhere near a grand all-in.

Isn’t it great that these parts can still be fabricated by ( hopefully) Uk companies.
Yes they are expensive but they look fantastic. If you compare them to a JK or other similar basic system then they appear good value.

  5. Well TT exhausts can't fabricate them, not without a complete [good con] system to create a jig from, they just got back to me.

  6. US

I made my own stainless J tubes and use the vintage speed backbox on my 72 type 4

  7. I tried once with the cherry bombs which was a disaster noise wise, looks cool though. I will definitely be having another go if I could find a suitable back box:thumbsup:

  8. I’ve done the conversion from your system to Late US spec / euro HX years ago. The most difficult parts to find were the correct tinware.

What did German supply come back with

  10. Didn't bother to reply, usually means they can't be arsed to ship or don't have the part.
Several U.S. companies including Summit failed to reply

As this seems to be an issue for all American style exhaust systems going into the future, besides removing the American style heat exchangers, changing whatever tinware etc, is there a simple way to adapt a European silencer to fit onto the ends of American heat exchangers?

I'm guessing some cutting of pipes, manufacturing triangular flanges and welding, is this not the best way to go?

As an example, but please ignore the style I currently have if this style makes it harder, if the yellow cuts were done somewhere on the pipes and the blue X was an easily obtainable silencer, is this completely bonkers?

  14. Yes you could make an adapter if you’re good at welding and fabrication but it’s not easy as you’re connected up usa triangle flange with one circular hole to a trapezoid shape flange with two holes.

it would also push the silencer further away from the motor and may cause it to conflict with the rear bumper.

  15. No not at all
    I was thinking something similar
If the 2lt tail pipes you can get have the same flange (maybe different) buy a couple of them and cut them down, then marry up a silencer of some sort somehow the straight tube can’t be that hard to get

Thanks. I'm not wedded or even welded to the idea, just exploring options as I will have the same problem the op does have now. Thanks for the pointers.

  19. Sorry for not replying sooner, I don't get any notification that new posts have been added.
I will try some of the suggestions above.
Summit got back, nice chap but couldn't help
