Day 1 of my open university course in VW Campervan Maintenance

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by darron smith, Aug 28, 2020.

  1. Today I start my vocational training on vw campervan maintenance. I am 54yrs old of age with no mechanical training and a hard drive completely full of unrelated information. My van won't start and the forum have suggested I become more self reliant.

Task 1- Find the Haines Manual that I bought in good faith.

  2. Task 1 complete

Task 2 Read manual, Should I start on page 1 or just go to page 145 starter motor? This might take a while!

  3. You haven't failed yet, but you have already bought the wrong text book ... get the Bentley one it is much better.

  4. well done Darron also get the Bentley manual, a small but useful stock of tools and a good multi meter.
There is loads of info on here and if you get stuck no question is a stupid one, except what engine oil is used, that will draw some unusual answers.
When you have a problem initially look for the simple and work up not the expensive and work down
    Good luck

Usually found it good to have a mix of all 3 books: Bentley, Haynes and Muir's How to Keep You Volkswagen Alive...

....and places like this forum to ask the questions the books don't answer.

  7. Official service manual, was written/published by Bentley. Can find it on Just Kampers. Beware, it's expensive everywhere unless you get a used copy.

  10. Task 3, Learn how to read & follow manual closely. Close enough for example, to spot that Haines is spelled oddly enough with a Y, 'Haynes'. Whilst this is not crucial, it will stand you in good stead later on, when you have to remove things like the bumbers, the dissy and other more technical bits.

  14. Agreed , they are a tad expensive and you wouldn`t want to be flicking through it with grubby mitts , a **Haynes will get you going for now

  15. Having thought I'd lost my Bentley manual, I have a second hand one on its way in the post to me, when it arrives will be happy to sell on for what I paid (£22.00) plus postage.

For a novice the Muir comic is essential – you can colour in the cartoons while waiting for the breakdown truck.

  18. I tried it, now I need to clean my monitor.

  19. If you’re doing this with the OU, make sure you’ve got a beard and very wide lapels. it would help if you self-identify as a woman (the beard’s ok).

There’s a demo supporting the rights of transgender Amazonian vegans at 15:00. Don’t miss it!
