Dash clock advice

Discussion in 'How To' started by Rob Chesters, Mar 7, 2023.

  1. I picked up a dash clock from a recent swap meet - I believe its from a type 3, see attached pictures. I'm optimistically thinking of dropping it into my late bay dash. Has anyone done this before? I haven't checked if its working yet so also wanted to ask if its 6 or 12v - the label on the back is unreadable so I'm cautious about attaching any power to it until I know the voltage. Any advice much appreciated! IMG_1903.jpg IMG_1904.jpg

  2. looks like 6 V wrote in red by someone... usually there is a red stamp "07 - 6 V"
isn't there any VW part number for identification?

Get an adjustable 12 volt stepdown power supply -- this is £1.49 , and total overkill for the job.. You adjust the screw to set the voltage.
Similar would do as a fuel gauge regulator.

Or I am sure that the classic car fraternity can sell one in a box for about £20..

Looks like a late type 3 clock , unlikely to be 6v but possible, look on the metal case for numbers , plenty of folks have fitted them to bay dashes

  7. I have a VDO clock that was in our dash. It clearly has 12v stamped on the back of the case, but still runs at approximately twice the correct speed. Everything checked, properly earthed, 12v going to the correct terminals, but couldn't get it to slow down, so in the end took it out. Will replace with a tachometer when I get around to it. I haven't actually tried giving it 6v, might be worth a go?

  8. It’s hard to see but I think it’s marked 6v so might go for Mikes suggestion of a voltage step down supply and try that first. I’ve got the bezel and glass off but still need to get the mechanism out to see what state it’s in!

  11. That’s strange - was in another language when I viewed on my pc, in English on my phone.

That is weird. If I use phone it’s in English but pc is something else. And it’s only on the first post, the second one is normal.

  14. It’s in a weird font for some reason? Cut and pasted from another application maybe? If you have that font in your device it’ll work but if you don’t then you get gobbledygook?

 it looks like greek to me too!

  16. It is in Greek letters but it is actually English with substituted Greek letters
Here is first paragraph put into WORD and font changed

Parts required / used by me :

    · Clock

    · 2 L shaped brackets (fashioned from thin 1mm thick steel)

    · “O” ring bracket (I forget what they are called, they tighten with a screwdriver)

Firstly, before you do anything, go grab the camera and a pen and paper..........now take the bezel screws out and “ease” the bezel housing the clocks forward to expose the wiring, then with care, lie this down upside down, as much as you can and take multiple pictures, supplement this with a diagram and note wire colours, I can’t stress enough how important that part is, so make sure its done.

Now, disconnect all the wires (you have taken the pics right ?) and take the bezel out.

You can see in this first picture that I am offering the clock to the housing from the front, its close, but no cigar, the same can be said from the rear.

  17. +1 for the voltage step down module. I used one on my clock as it was gaining time when the bus was running & charging. I set it at 12v output & the clock is bang on time now
