There was one of those Thunderbirds type puppet shows where they drove about facing backwards watching a screen...
Even better, cut out the bevel box and reposition the steering wheel for back seat driving - direct to the rack and better head-on impact protection - sit your kids in a row across the front seats and drive while having tea and cakes in the back.

  2. That was my wooden leg you heard......yes it's finding the right rack, preferably with centre load to keep your tie rods as long as possible to eliminate bump steer and to keep geometry as close to VW intended

  3. Wheel geometry on a T2 is easy... vw had the wheels move up and down linearly!! It's wishbones and coilovers that cause the issue, as the wheel moves in an arc!!
Then there is castor and camber... try getting your head round some of that!!

But then camber on a T2 is straightforward, yet so many places just don't bother setting it, and people wonder why their vans handle funny on corners and in straight lines o_O Last one I checked, the N/S wheel was 1.5° positive, and the O/S wheel 1° positive... they are supposed to be 0.5° positive

I expect that's a better drive than one +ve and one -ve... Been there and driven that.

  5. Yes great fun indeed!.....I remember spending a bank holiday Monday at my local Tyre shop with the manager trying to program their latest four wheel alignment equipment because the data only went back as far as the T25 and typing in the data with degrees, minutes and seconds and realising it would only take Decimal degrees!
That was a joyous drive round the block until we realised.

  6. Wasn't a bad drive... cornering was a little interesting in places tho

    fun fun fun

    I use one of these:

That's the one. It looks a bit like a shark? I never noticed at the time.

  9. If you use a LHD rack and flip it upside down then it'd turn the right way?
I've got loads of piccies on my external hard drive i'll post up tonight if anyones interested.

  11. Hey Paul....how much was your camber meter? and has it paid for itself?

and another thing....having completely stripped the back axle (hubs, plates, torsion bars the lot...) and not take the precaution to mark everything up relative to each other when fitting Red 9 lowering plates :)oops:)....who has the necessary to set it up properly? The tyre and tracking place in Bolton (Thistlethwaites) is reknown as one of the best places in the North West...when I had a chat with the technician a while back, he puffed his cheeks out and shrugged his shoulders....they got Lazers an' evryfink

Thinking about that a bit more.....it would, so sorry I spoke. And now what I said has dissapeared so the edit doesn't make any sense at all.

  14. thats what i did on my bay rack and pinion set up to correct a reversed steering shaft input

  15. I think it was around £45, as I got it from a local supplier who stocks sealey items!!

It's paid for itself, in the sense that none of the local tire fitters can do camber setting, only tracking o_O

But it means I can set/check camber on vans/cars that are driving oddly!! :)

  16. how do you use the magnetic type gauge do you have to take the wheels of every time to measure? i've got a dunlop one that pushes against the side of the wheel to measure camber very handy tool when you like playing with old cars and vans ;)

  17. Yeah, you have to take the wheel off!! But you also have to make sure that the van is dead level too!!

I do it with the wheels on as well. I have a digital inclinometer and made a jig that sits against the wheel rim for it. I zero it on a long piece straight piece of heavy timber where the van will sit so it doesn't have to be absolutely level. I like the look of Pauls though.

  19. mine goes against wheel as well but its not that posh just has a bubble like a spirit level and a calibrated scaled knob every full turn is 1 degree

I borrowed one like that but I couldn't figure out how it worked.
