Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Gnasha, Jul 10, 2020.

  1. I have two type 4 2.0 cylinder heads:

022101372G which I have found information, 37.5 xx 33mm FI sodium filled.

022101372S: I cannot find any data at all, please help.

Ive been to other sites including type 4 secrets with no joy IMG_2695.JPG

    Please help Thank you

  2. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

    I think that must be a G?

  3. I think this a G? IMG_2696.JPG

  4. Think that's the 1700 / (1800 poss) 39.3 x 33 head .. or it could just be a G

Just found an 'S' on a different head and there a bit more rounded

  5. they both came from 2.0

  6. Most likely it's a G not an S then.. but don't forget people mess about with these.. Zedders heads are 1700's I think but they're in a big lump now!..

If the valves are the same and cylinder size, combustion chamber , ports match on both can't see what other things might effect them in use...

    Following @zedders interpretation, I think I can see a G ( and a portrait of Elvis ..)

  8. with some valve sizes being so close together, what is the best method of physically checking them for size? or is it best to go by trusted data specs for that particular head?

thanks to everybody for their input, much appreciated.

  9. I think John Wayne is there if you look closely:D

Thats the most convincing yet and Ill take it, thank you. just need to measure the valve sizes, how can I tell with no valves in the heads?

  10. There's a fair step from the 37.5 to the 39.3 then up to 41's on intake so should be just a caliper job..valve seats should be just a bit bigger than valve head.. I could tell just by looking they didnt match.. the chamber is a big indicator too much different shape

022-101-372S doesn’t exist, unless you have a one off, that S is almost certainly a G.

They’re probably a pair of 022-101-372G heads from a 1976/8 2.0l FI. Oval ports, one should have a CHT sensor, originally with 37.5mm inlet valves and 33mm exhaust valves, possibly sodium filled, but unlikely now.

The only way to know what size the valves actually are is to measure them. And if they’re original valves you probably wouldn’t want to reuse them. 37.5x33 were the smallest valves VW fitted to any type 4 head.
