Custom Resto 71 Dare to be Different

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by outlaw, Aug 11, 2011.

  1. The next step along was to fabricate a sun visor - always to be different I did not want a clip on visor so I hand rolled and a visor for myself.
Making a card template I then cut some 18swg steel and rolled and shaped as required - when the panel fitted snug to the roof i then added a rolled leading edge from 6mm mild steel rod and bead rolled some seam lines to maintain the strength and shape.
This was then welded into place and finished as required - time taken 1 day - Some people have stated that the bus has a cap on - a bay with attitude -

  2. Excellent work mate

  3. Moving forward with the bus it was time to add a little trick to the tailgate - After doing a little deal with Scott c/o cool campers Bournemouth I had myself a vw caddy tailgate somewhat damaged but not a problem -
With a nice new cutting wheel i set about removing the script the bead swage a line in the script just to be different
    - Measure how many times and cut once then a little joggle and fettle it then fitted - nice plug welds hold it in place along with tiger seal internal braces.

Later within the thread extra little bits are done to enhance the rear

  4. The cab doors were the next to be reworked jut a simple job of a re skin if anyone wants to do theirs I am happy to give some little pointers -
I still need glass and 1/4lights at the right price - if not i will make some 1 piece windows
    Cheap doors £10.00 the pair
    [IMG]

    Re skinned

  5. Staying with the subject of getting all skinned up the sliding door was just the same a very simple process and evenings work this is now all skinned the lower 1/4 inner and outer

Slowly it she is having her own style built into her with no rot left all good metal - So just pushing forward it was bumper time - Staying with the Frenching style i made buckets for both bumpers to suit custom number plates (very small) a very rewarding quick job that enhances the bus - Please note the bumpers used were in very rough condition i would not do this to a nice pair. Still wanted a pair of early bumper irons

  6. It was pointed out to me that I had left the join lip in the front panel at the bottom and it looked funny - I had never noticed it but after reviewing the comment yep it had to go-
A process of de seaming took place just like my old mini days roofs and gutters.
After it was all removed and welded I wanted something a little different so I hand fabricated a swage line panel again just to be different.
A bit more cutting and fitting all done

  7. To continue with the metal fabrication it was time to have a look at the dash - I had been given a 7" tv dvd cd uit from a kind chap with a t4 bus i worked on -
1st stage to remove the glove box cover and fabricate an infill as required - quick and simple task - then out with the old radio being creative I wanted to continue with the frenching theme - I chose a triangle shape with a slight recess to it simple task fabricate the panel and cut and weld.
The last part was quite a fight i wanted to use the original dash insert but french it in as before a bucket was made then welded and cleaned off - all the heater controls will have to be shortened but not a bad job to do -

  8. Moving onto the wheels - I purchased a set of old Audi 200 rims FOR £30.00 they needed the centre opening out a touch a simple little job.
I thought that they would look good with the spokes and outer rim polished and the rest painted black -
Lots of sanding and lots of polishing with auto autosolv i got a finish -
I am still not sure if to run these rims as I would like a nice chrome set if the budget allows (wife)
So they may be for sale fingers crossed

  9. Moving onto the inside she has to have a custom interior thats final
I let my creative side take over a bit like Leepoo from chop shop lol
I hand fabricated a shaped seat frame in angle steel - between the seats I fabricated some brackets to house a tv unit the floor will be laminate and the sides of the seat will be a veneer finish -
I have a 1000wt sub for between the front seats that are now saab - and another 1000watt sub to go under the shaped seat - i have 2 amps to go with is as well -" she will be a rockin Bus "
The bottom edge of the curved seat will be lit by purple leds
I need a trimmer to make cushion covers if we have any trimmers on the site please pm me
To Finish thing off I make my own rocknroll bed from a futon frame so we can sleep in her as well -
A few pics of what has been done so far
saab seats cost a £10.00 wrong colour

  17. Hi i have tried to enhance the bus and not go to far i would like to think when its parked up around others it would take a couple of walk arounds to spot the changes.

    Thanks for your comments

  18. You got any more done Dale , in paint yet :)

  19. The roof is in paint but i am not happy with it so i flattened off today I will re paint soon,
I am a little slow at present but the roof has really taken a lot of work Ash it was a real mess - Plus I have a lot of problems with water in the paint - I have water filters on the compressor and in line its doing my head in chap -
When i get past this bit its a walk in the park - It as if she is complaining about being painted yellow.

    Frustrated in Ferndown !!!!!
