Cup holder / storage ideas in walk through area

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by 75swampy, Sep 20, 2015.

  1. i find it best not to put a cup down , it either gets spilt .licked by some thirsty dog ,or you cant remember where you left it , plus drinking and eating whilst driving is as i was told not allowed in europe , hence cleaner hedge rows etc :D

  2. Does anyone know the dimensions of the walk through or dimensions that a box could be to fit in there? I have an idea for a box but can't get to my van to measure.

  3. I'm not having a go, but I don't think there's anywhere near £150 in materials and labour in a box of this design....veneered ply can be bought locally, from any decent ply merchants, the board can be cut in a matter of minutes and any routing/trammelling/edging required is approximately 10 minutes with a basic router....Fair enough, if you haven't got the tools, skills or inclination....but let's be honest...it's ply box....and if you're looking at small run production it'd be cheaper to do them in mdf and have a local kitchen door company vinyl wrap them for peanuts...guess it's a niche market and they sell for what they sell for....

Is that a two holer privvy for people with little bottoms?

  5. My spend so far is £8.99 for a drinks holder in eBay.

Using left over material from our interior build which would have been scrapped plus screws & hinges in my shed.

Its nothing flash as I don't have all the tools to get a perfect cut or finish. I have ran out of t trim so the edges are going to be rustic. It will be functional. If it looks daft I'll take it out and use it in my shed.

    Tools : jigsaw & screwdriver

Material : lightweight ply, screws, hinges.

Since it's the last of my interior board it's not in the best condition so I'll give it the vintage look somehow. I'll post pics of the end outcome isn't to embarrassing.

  6. As with anything I suspect its partly about volume and therefore partly about value pricing.

I totally understand your point, so just to set out my stall... Firstly, I'm not selling them and don't intend to (some serious Marmite went down today and is MUCH more important).

I said £150 rough guide on the basis of what I'd built. This was based on half a sheet of lightweight moorland ply at £60 ish, cnc cutting and drilling which has cost me around £30 for half a sheet in the context of my whole interior. These two items alone were intended to give me a professional finish where every edge was straight and every screw in exactly the right place!

Edging is around £4 a meter, there are four hinges circa £10, two pop catches around £10, a bit of iron on edging, say £1.50 and the two cup holders, again about £10. I paid delivery to the cnc shop for about £12 a sheet and collected from London to Portsmouth driving back from the Pod

If I wanted to knock them out cheap, I'd get the cnc shop to cut mdf templates and I'd invest in a good router and some space, which would save £30 and collection charges on each unit and may open up the design to alternative cheap materials. I could get a bulk discount on the small parts but factor in most suppliers delivery charges and it won't go far.

And how much would I want to profit out of each box? The first one took a couple of hours to build (excluding design time)... I'd like to make £25ph, but if I'm honest I'd do better doing something else with my main employment!

I think you need to be a company like Madmats with a bit of market presence to make enough of these without the scrutiny that a start up / hobbyists seem to get!

So, to quote a dragon or two.... I'm oot!

I`ve got one of these in my bus and it`s a smashing little box on legs. I had the chap make mine with a little padding on the lid so it was a nice little seat as well. It lives in my van and I hide all my treasure in there (spare baccy, spare filters, spare papers) and other `things`, apart from at shows where it lives under my scabby old gazebo and serves as a spare stool or my smoking table for my spinney ashtray and my bottle of Stella. If I`m `On One` I put a cool bag inside so I can keep a half a dozen or so Stellas in there to save me walking all the way to the van to get a cold one. Yes it works, yes it fits, I wouldn`t be bothered to make one for that sort of money and I`m sure I could if I wanted to. It comes well recommended by me and I`ve had it for more than two years. I do like the work of that one that`s decorated as that`s the only thing that lets this box down in my bus because it`s new ish and every thing in my bus ain`t.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Oktoberfest if any one fancies a Stella or two :D

I was enjoying what should have been an interesting thread. But as soon as i saw the bitching, yawn, i gave up. This place has changed a lot. Seems nowhere is safe from keyboard fights. (no offence to either of those involved)

Quick question have you secured your cup holder box in any way or is it just free standing?

Mines is nearly finished and ready to go in. Pretty happy with how it looks . If I had more material I'd make 6 and sell them on here......... one at a time.

Hello stranger, just because you have an early, doesn't mean you have to limit yourself to that other site where nothing happens. :)

  15. I wasn't having a go, or dissing the product at all....it looks well thought out and well put together...it's more a general moan about the mark up on some of the stuff people make (or get made) for campervans...once the 'going rate' has been established, the price seems to be fixed regardless of the quality....i appreciate bespoke stuff is a different kettle of fish as you're paying for someone's skills and tooling, but when I see a gnarly old piece of tinware on ebay for £150 it makes me wince...it sets a precedent for anyone to sell carp for top dollar, which isn't in the collective interests of campervan owners...rarity value I get, but realistic pricing is better for all in the long run....

maybe i just need a better paid job:D

Zed matey,, It`s not that I limit myself, it`s just that I don`t get on line as much as I`d like because of that four letter word that starts with W and ends with K and I`m not talking about loosening up my wrist joints here ;) Good to hear that your still kickin bud, is everything ok or as much as it can be ? I gotta say I was very very tempted by your engine sale, but I thought at the time that you would have been deluged with info requests etc etc etc, so I let it lie. I heard through the vine that you sold your E.A.R.L.Y. as well, so what you smoking around in now, anyfink interesting or if it`s a raw thing just leave it be. I was browsing around when I spotted this thread and thought I`d chuck my two penneth worth in with a fact or two from my point of view just to smooth things over a tad if you know what I mean. Did you hear what happened to me on the old Severn Bridge a year or so ago, if you didn`t then check out a thread over on the E.A.R.L.Y. B.A.Y. it`s titled `Ozziedog goes topless` it`s a nice little read if you got a spare thirty seconds, I can`t work that linky thing to do that for you bud. Good to keep in touch mate.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Any shows this year? I got one left in Dartmouth

  18. Mine just sits on top of the rubber walkthrough mat, doesn't seem to move about since I glued the rubber mat to the floor

I'm just finishing a lovely late Devon for myself, it will have a 2.4L T4 engine. :) A few more weeks and it'll be done.
Yep I read about your exploits on the Severn bridge!

I just sold my non-walkthrough bus. Now I have a walkthough one.
It was irritating to have to get out and walk round the bus if I'd set off and forgotten to latch a cupboard door or left the road atlas in the back. If it was raining when I got to a site I'd have to get out and trample mud and wet into the back just to get there. I'm not going to be blocking my walkthrough with a box as practical and attractive as they are. :)
