It’ll be done again next week if it’s leaking :(

Apologies for the delayed update. Work has been off the map and the boss thought his Jag boot not opening was more important. Anyway engine in and running. Only managed a ten mile road test but all seems ok so far.
To summarise I’ve fitted a 10mm Victor Reinz viton crank seal and pressed it all the way in as far as it would go with a smear of sealer all around the outside diameter. Super cleaned everything, filed the sharp edge off the case, polished the good flywheel and fitted a new rubber O ring dry.

    Why Victor Reinz ?
After all that I was even getting on my own nerves.
I ordered a 10mm Elring seal then found out I had a 12mm crank case. Panicked a bit after reading loads of threads on the Samba etc so ordered a 12mm seal from Simply Bearings. My gut feeling was the 12mm seal was just too heavy duty and possibly not fit for purpose so decided to go 10mm. At this point I found a new Victor Reinz 10mm Viton seal that I had bought about 7 years ago. When compared to the Elring seal it just looked and felt much better quality and also felt about twice as heavy so that’s what has gone in.

I should be doing all this, my flywheel sealing surface isn't good. I have a spare good one now but boy do I wish I'd had it ready when I swapped gearboxes twice in the last couple of years. It's a lot of work for a small leak.

Yes, lots of work for a slightly niggling leak. I’ve put up with it for 8 years. It’s just the lockdown that has spurred me on to fix it.

The 12mm seal you bought was a double lip, nothing to do with it being heavy duty and it was certainly fit for purpose. But if the 10mm seal works…
