  2. I thought it was referring to the taper that the flywheel shoulder..but guess same applies. If the seal is too thick it will be on the rounded part..
I know this is a type 1 section but similar arrangement

..ah here I have found something..but..its actually opposite to what I mentioned before..ahh getting olds no joy..

„If by front main ...you mean the crank shaft seal at the flywheel.....the symptom of having no real oil leaking while driving at highway speed....but upon shut down you get an immed8ate running of oil out of the crankcase to transmisson joint making a puddle of about 8-10" in diameter. .....is also the exact symptom that comes from having a 12mm vanagon-esque seal bore with a stock 10.5-11mm seal.
It causes the seal to not ride up high enough on the tapered snout and has not enough sdal tension.
It does not leak much while driving because the centrifugal force and wind from the flywheel keeps the oil wrapped up and pinned to the case joint.
The main leakage comes on shut down
Otherwise the only big leakage from a long drive comes from the large round hole for the torque converter bolts on the 3/4 side of the engjne bell housing where it leaks into the engine compartment. If your plastic hole plug is tight you may only get a little seepage.

When the engine shuts down...all or that oil pinned to the case sides drops and forms a quick puddle.
Other similar causes of this system are flywheels whose snout was cleaned up on a lathe or with emory cloth and they took it down too far or really excessive crank end play. Ray

I don’t really know what Ray is on about. Neither the front (flywheel) or rear (fan) seals run on a taper. The front seal runs on the parallel OD of the flywheel snout and the rear seal runs on the parallel OD of the fan hub. The fan hub fits on the crankshaft taper but that’s not where the seal is.

The pic that Deefer66 posted shows where care needs to be taken when fitting a double lip seal to ensure it doesn’t run on the flywheel snout radius.

I put dry marker ink on flywheel to see where the new seal will run. Looks good.

That looks fine but you can clearly see that the outer lip of a double lip seal would be closer to the radius on the flywheel snout.

Yes. If it was a 12 mm seal then it might be too close

If the recess is 12mm a 12mm double lip seal should fit but as I've said a few times it should be checked. You'have fitted a 10mm seal in a 12mm recess and Samba Ray thinks it will leak.

  9. But the first lip is the oil seal from the engine side , the second a dust seal from the bell house side.. so shouldn't cause too much problem... unless the first lip gets pushed too far out...

10 mm fitted and going in van tomorrow. Hopefully Latebay Vinny will prove Samba Ray wrong.

It’s good having the workshop but I’m lucky if I get an hour a day to play. Too many customers spoiling the fun.

  17. You put your oil seal in
    Your oil seal out
    In, out, in, out
    Shake it all about...

If you can shake it all about you’ve got the wrong one!

If it was just a type-1 engine you could wind electrical tape round it until it's a snug fit.
