Converting our Devon bunks into a bed

  1. We saw a Devon with this conversion at Stanford Hall. So decided to have a go. We finished it today . It has cost £95 all in and it actually works .

    The kids love it

And there's enough headroom to sit under it

It all piles up during the day and the boards can travel insitu, so don't take up any space. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1372194332.285123.jpg
Four boards made from 18mm block board make the bed, these are covered with material and foam .

  2. Looks great! Well done!

Cool, have been thinking of doing exactly that myself, good job!

  4. like it. Nice job!

  5. What did you use to hold it up there? Looks like angle iron?

  6. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

I like that - and I like your stripey material. :)

  7. Yes 20mm angle iron . The one at Stanford looked like aluminium?
I'm no expert at this stuff , so there's probably better materials out there for the job, but it works. Trying it out at Dent this weekend :)

  8. what's the head room like up there? could an adult or two sleep up there?
thought about it a while ago after been impressed with a friends new westy roof but didn't know how it's work with a devon. Great job and love it !

Looks great! I bought my Devon based upon this type of conversion it had.

  10. Joycee posting on tlb shocker:eek:

Angle iron aka bed iron is the material of the past and future:thumbsup:

  11. i didn't know devon did a full width roof bed, just bunks. i like the idea a LOT. i always wondered why they didn't just make one big roll out hammock instead of two narrow ones.

  12. i can get hold of angle iron all day long, but guess ally would be lighter? - may have to try this.

  13. and it means i can make more curtains for around the pop top - BONUS! :D

  14. Have a look at my resto thread
Paul Weeding is using angle iron at my request
Its cheaper especially if its free and its stronger than ally
Pauls welded it into my roof instead of rivits so it stengthens the roof at the same time

  15. what size are your boards so i can measure up for fabric?

  16. 15 inch boards. Makes a 60 inch bed for the kids. I don't think it would work too well for adults, boards would need to be stronger and you'd need an extra one for length. This would also restrict access a bit?

  17. thank you. also, where did you get the fabric from and how did you attach the angle iron?
think you should do a whole tutorial on it, it's brilliant! :)

  18. Nice job, I think I would have used ply board rather then the block board as ply board is a lot stronger and block board is for making wardrobes, plus one day a adult will jump up there and come down twice as quick,
About 50 yrs ago when we used to make go carts from old pram wheels and bits of wood, I made one with block board needless to say when a couple of mates jumped on it snapped so I am speaking from experience,
    Steve,

  19. brilliant !

  20. great work

.....I was thinking of doing something like this myself
