As per title. Want to pick up a spare coil. Any recommendations on what's good and what's best to avoid.

    Find one:thumbsup:
At a reasonable price I mean. There's a 33 quidder that JK are selling and if course we don't know if the op is running FI, electronic ignition, points or carbs. Type 4 or Type 1 (1700 Type4?) ...Shouldn't make a deal of difference but the original Blue coils are eyewateringly expensive for type 4. And apparently they came in black as well:rolleyes:

So as a pro @Milky what would you recommend

The VW branded black coil from Heritage Parts. £36.
Works exactly as well as a Bosch Blue for £149..
Stores enough energy to make a spark .. every time.

If it fits in the clamp, has a coil resistance of 3 to 4 ohms, 12 volt non ballast type ..use it.

I think mr Ratwell is .. confused .. Its quite possible to make a piece of copper wire with a resistance of 3 ohms. It's not zero as he imagines.. Just like the secondary is several thousand ohms just by being a very long piece of thin copper wire wound in a coil ..

Points burn up if the condenser is not slowing the voltage rise as the points open.

Hunt about for a Bosch Blue one even if its a few quid more , do the job once and forget. Mind you I just realised its for a spare so any coil if it gets you home .

For the avoidance of doubt Mike, do you measure on the positive and negative terminals or the centre pole and negative terminal?
