And in the mean time a new government will come into power and put a stop to it next year or so. Like they did the last time. I'm not holding my breath on this one.

  7. Unless you know something we don't the next election isn't due until 2015. So this will have come in before a change of government. I doubt there's going to be a reversal of this - it wasn't even seen as important or significant enough to make the headlines of the budget changes in the news yesterday. It's only saddo's like us and our cronky old cars that are bothered by it. Therefore changes brought in are likely to be left alone.

I'd say that all that will happen if there is a change of government and therefore a change of policy is that there'll be no further advance of the cut-off date for historic vehicle status. The administrative headache of having to sift through all vehicles with historic status and contact all owners of Jan 73 to Jan 74 cars to get them to re-tax would be a nightmare, and they won't do it. But seeing as the current chancellor hasn't committed to any further extensions of the date either, unless the rolling exemption is reinstated, I'm not holding my breath on anything moving beyond Jan 74. Any further changes would have to be specifically made in next year's budget, and then the one after that, then after that, etc.

I can understand your point, but iirc from my old 72 beetle, the onus was on the owner to bring the info to the Post Office and prove the exemption. I had to go back and forth about 5 times before they accepted!!

Besides, it's all on a database now, so I dare say that it'll take a few seconds to update on a website and bobs your auntie. The first registration date is even on the V5 so, whilst it doesn't align with the current manufacturing cut off, this is already info that is at hand.

  9. But that's my point - it's not an easy thing for them to do, mainly because they don't take the lead in moving you into historic status. As you say, the onus is on you, so once you've applied for historic status and got it, because it can be based on manufacture and not registration, it's going to be difficult to revert back. I can't see the DVLA being bothered over a few hundred old cars.

If the policy changes, they just won't move the date any further forward.

    Me... 13months and 7 days!?

Aparently this wasn't uncommon due to the fuel crisis in the 70's. Something to do with lots of vehicles being stored in backrooms to avoid tax once they were on the forecourt... or something like that....

  15. I'd like to think this was all down to me signing the petition

It's £200, same as less than 4 tanks of fuel. If it rolls on - happy days: if it don't I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

Next election isn't till 2015 so there is a chance for a few more us, the Conservatives seem keen on this, Gordon Brown scuppered it last time. I suppose he thought that only rich people could afford to run an indulgent classic vehicle, I know different.

If I have this right you don't eat meat and drink two pints a year, if this is the case you may be the only one here who lives to see all the air-cooled VWs tax free.
