Childhood camper photo - can we identify the exact model?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by paulcalf, Jun 28, 2020.

  1. A family friend provided this photo of my childhood bay.

Apparently that is my cot above the engine!

I think it's a Devon based on the curtains & the sink/cooker lifted worktop, which I'm quite pleased about as my current bus is a Devon.

Anyone help with any further identification?

    Model or year?

Early or late bay? Can you tell from the tailgate?

  2. What year was the picture taken and how old were you?

I'd say it was a 72 or later bay going by the orange checked upholstery used by Devon.
Does the sink location point to it being a moonraker?

  3. I'm a 1974 model year!

No idea how long I would have been in a cot.

No idea of year photo was taken.

I think moonrakers were much later in the 70s.

  4. I don't think it's an early Devon as these were the Tourvette/Eurovette models with two drawers across the back ( between the spare wheel and wardrobe) which were about 6 inches deep and the bed wasn't a R&R item , it slid out from under the drawers and the front supported by dancette screw in legs .
My only other van was a '68 Tourvette , loved the conversion but certainly isn't the one pictured , that looks later with a proper bed/seat and no tall storage units backing onto the bulkhead ...

  6. No idea I'll have a look in the thread that @Poptop2 did about early/late/crossover buses

  7. is that based on the tailgate?

It seems to be a 'poverty' spec bus as there is no cushion/foam over the engine. Although that may just not feature in the photo

Looks like a Danbury style interior, may even be a Canterbury Pitt?

The brown plaid looks Devon’ish though:thinking:

Forward and rear facing seats in the back.
What are the ones with the seats that slide on rails?

Were they on rails. Do you mean the system that had a side sink by the slider and two box like seats at the front that formed a bed with the table between them and the rear seat? I think that was Danbury.

Maybe. I remember ali rails and the two boxes sliding for some purpose. The one I had in the shed didn't work, rails filled with crud. Someone on here is renovating the same interior I think.

  15. I bought a Danbury interior a few years ago with the cabinet sink next to the slider and the cooker in one of the rear facing buddy seats - that was on rails/runners, bloody dangerous idea. The bed was converted using the two rear seat backs dropped down onto the front lip of the two buddy seats.

  17. This is from the 1972 Devon brochure showing the Devonette and Moonraker interiors. It shows a pair of drawers in the moonraker above the engine that are accessible either from inside or outside though the tailgate. The camper in original piccy doesn't have these. It doesn't have the white faced door on the side cupboard in the rear either.
The plaid upholstery does look Devon though.

That’s the one. I had that conversion in my 71 bay. Zed was right about the rails and you’re right about the seat backs. I converted mine to a sort of drop down bed affair after Lou complained we couldn’t make a cup of tea in bed. It’s all come flooding back now.
