Changing the steering pin AKA relay lever pin

Discussion in 'How To' started by Chrisradioman, May 19, 2014.

  1. The procedure was:-
1.) hammer the bottom cover off with a small chisel or screw driver.
2.) Undo the bolt on the relay lever.
3.) Pull the pin out from the bottom and undo the grease nipple.
4.) Pull the relay lever out of the way, I left everything connected
5.) Pull off the top cap and seal, remove the seal and shim from the relay leaver
6.)I used a screwdriver and carefully drove the top bearing out upwards.
7.) I used a hacksaw blade and cut through the bottom bearing which then fell out.
    8.) clean everything off thoroughly
9.) I used a threaded bar, 2 dished washers off T4 caravelle mushroom bolts and 2 17mm nuts.
10.) Pressed the bottom bearing in flush with the bottom
11.) Pressed the top bearing in 1.1mm from the top face.
12.) pushed the pin in making a note of where the slot is and making sure the spring washer goes on first.
13.) put the large washer in the cap followed by the seal then pushed it on the pin.
14.) put the small seal on followed by the shim followed by the relay leaver.
15.) Jack up the vehicle on the centre pin I used a block of wood between the jack and the bottom pin.
    16. Line up the relay leaver with the slot in the pin and G-clamp it down tight.
17.) put the 19mm bolt back in the relay leaver making sure you fit the lock tab first.
18.) Tighten up to the torque in the manual (can't remember what it was now)
19.) refit the grease nipple and the bottom cover
    20. Grease it up with a grease gun
21.) while your there grease your beam too. :)
