Cause of smell?

    Hi,
Now my bus is running nicely again, I turn my attention to the fuel smell when cornering hard right.

    Could it come from this?
    Looks like it needs changing.

Possible without removing engine? ( never done it, not confident yet) [IMG][IMG]

  2. That looks wet to me? Is it the filler hose?

It is pure agony to change it with the engine in.

I did mine through the "paint tin" and it popped off after a while....
If you do insist on keyhole surgery. ..Buy new hose clips with 1/4 inch hex heads on the screws then you wont be burring off crossheads, missing the slot on flat head screws on the clamps. Just use a socket on an extension..

Dropping the engine is so much less faff than 1/3 tank of fuel pouring out and then having to drop the engine anyway.

Replacement hoses go slippery with the fuel and pop off easier if the clips arent on perfectly straight.

    Did you mean hard left?
Hard right I might have a look at the tank vent pipe join that hides behind the spare wheel well.
What Mike says about dropping the engine, it's quicker in the long run and you'll still have some skin on your forearms.

  7. Search for the thread "Fuel Hose Woes".
It's about me doing my filler hoses, and contains instructions on how to do it through the tin lid hole.

When you say 'drop the engine' does that mean I don't have to undo everything and remove engine from bus?

I can just drop it down?

Better to get it right out of the way but if you have a top hatch to access the engine bay...
Getting the flippin barsteward hose nicely onto the rather short tank stub is basically what this job is. It's a two hand/good access job and essential that it's done right. See Mike's "popped off" comment. Sometimes the quick way just means you then have to do it the hard way as well - might as well cut to the chase?

  12. I'd be inspecting all the other possible fuel smells before even considering dropping the engine.
Unless that is that you can see that big hose is definitely wet?
Put your phone on video mode with the flash on and film inside the paint tin lid pointing in all directions.
Read the very detailed thread about fuel smells

  13. Or stick a lighted match in so you can see better?

I've changed all fuel pipes and breathers I can.

Fuel filler hose and 2 breathers above tank remain and need changing I can see.

Just scared about taking out engine as I haven't done it yet and I use the bus for work.
I have a four day weekend, perhaps I could do it then.

  15. If you’ve got a type 4, if you can get the “firewall” off without removing the engine (possible), that’s all you need to do for access. Engine out for sure with a type 1.

As the others have said, changing the hose is a right bloody wrestling match, but it’s doable. Change the filler cap elbow while you’re at it .

  16. At the risk of a bit of a hijack mine leaks on a hard left but past the filler cap when fullish and down the outside thats an easy fix with a good cap I hope.,, if it is the filler pipe get ready to swear a lot... apart from on a double cab which is quite easy to get to

any good sealing tank caps recomended? (Not C&C locking one... thats what i have)

  17. Type 4 as mentioned is relatively easy to get the bulkhead out. Easier access to the breather hose connections on the tank & the filler hose.

The hose clips are a bit of an overkill & not needed so long as the hose is a good tight fit to the breather pipes. There’s no pressure in the breather system.

Sorry folks, I have type1 engine, so sounds like engine out (when I have the confidence!)

Winner - much easier to take out, but likely you don't have a hatch above the engine? For perspective, once you do know the routine it would be out in 30-40 minutes. Even when you know what's what a type-4 takes an hour or two and is much heavier.
