Cargo ply floor advice

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by Llardy, Aug 28, 2020.

  1. Is it possible to cut a single piece of ply to fit the entire cargo floor and it fit through the sliding door?

Not from a 1200 x 2400 sheet, they're not big enough. Westy floors don't continue under the RR bed which has it's own base.

Our floor comprises two one piece sections; one is approx. 18mm thick fibre board which goes from the walkthrough bit back to the round pipe for the heater under the bed base. On top of that is an identical single piece of ~4mm plyboard

Eh? I can see from your photo it doesn't cover the whole floor?

No, the plywood matches exactly the original fibreboard underneath it - that is the top layer & as far as I know its original in size / shape.

    I haven't got a photo to show :(

But it doesn't cover the entire floor, which was the question.

    yes you are right!

I was basing my answer on what we did, which worked for a westy.

  12. Any last minute advice before I cock this up? :)

I have this insulation this lead based matting and this 18mm ply.

cleaned up the floor and ready. 4 years old this floor. It’s a shame to cover it!

I’ll make a brew so be quick :)

18mm is rather thick, have to planned how you will finish it at the door opening? Whatever you do the sliding door hitting it could be a problem.
I have 8mm in the main lower areas to level it all and 3.6mm on top so only 3.6mm + vinyl at the threshold covered with a piece of ali.

12mm WPB ply , unfortunately a 1200 wide board isn’t wide enough so I did a join 75mm ish as you can see

  15. I read a few things about thickness and 18mm kept cropping up. Ive a vanwurks plate which looks like it’ll work. 157 width so will see.

18mm is massive , the floor is solid, you’re not trying to make a new floor just cover it, 10mm is plenty

  17. Measured it all and it’ll cover the vents which are functional so I will get some lighter stuff. I’m sure I read in here (a different post) about 18mm. Waste of £60 but 1. Gotta be right and 2. The Plywood will be used.

didn’t get chance to do it as I kept getting rained off and I also had to sort out the sliding door catching the sill.

I’ll do it next week! Hah thanks for the comments

  19. It was a fight but I won :)

used sound proof matting and cut it to fit the lower part of the cargo floor then used a 157 x 152 9mm ply board cutting out a few places. It’s a really good fit.

Now what do I do? Screw it down?

I don't bother but if you are going to screw it down, screw through the tin floor into the wood from under the van. That way you'll be able to aim and miss everything you want to, get the heads up in the corrugations and nothing inside to cover up or countersink etc. I learned that from Westfalia.
